This study examines depictions of the relationship between women and melancholia in German psychiatric textbooks published between 1803 and 1913. Focusing in particular on how these texts present the female life cycle, nineteenth-century views about female 'nature' and gender traits, and women's familial and professional roles, it reveals how nineteenth-century psychiatrists were caught between the scientific demand for objective clinical observation and the gender norms of the culture to which they belonged. On the one hand, psychiatrists carefully and sensitively describe female melancholia with evidence obtained through the scientific methods of clinical observation, anatomical investigation and self-questioning. On the other hand, language choice contributes to the naturalization of gender difference by assigning cultural meaning to clinical observations.

Während für Kraepelin die Dementia praecox besonders um den Mangel an Realitätssinn und Willenskraft gruppiert ist, betont Bleuler bei diesen Krankheiten die Störung des Zusammenwirkens psychischer Funktionen, des ästhetischen Aspekts der Harmonie.…”

Three methods for affect investigation are being presented: the method of psychopathology and phenomenology, the method of behavior theory and the method of psychoanalysis. From the phenomenological point of view affects are poorly covered by nosography. In the classical texts of former psychiatry they obviously play a more prominent role in the characterization of schizophrenic disorders. Affects were by definition no object of study in behaviorism. However, after the cognitive and emotional turn in behavior theory they are increasingly subject to theoretical and therapeutic claims. In psychoanalysis, affects were considered from the beginning to be a part of psychic representation of drive energy. Their change in psychoses may be related to psychotic change of drive energy. Starting from the task of economy of libido, affects received a widening of their significance within the development of psychoanalysis, in an additional sense of autonomous modality of the unconscious as well as emphasizing their signalling character and their impact on communication.Comprehensive theories of affect are yet still missing in psychiatry and in psychology. As the number of theories of personality grows, considerations in the field of philosophy of science are becoming even more important in order to achieve the required method safety.

This paper traces the history of Jung's ideas concerning the psychoid unconscious, from their origins in the work of the vitalist, Hans Driesch, and his concept of Das Psychoid, through the subsequent work of Eugen Bleuler, Director of the Burghölzli Asylum, and his concept of Die Psychoide, to the publication of Jung's paper On the Nature of the Psyche in 1947. This involves a review of Jung's early work and of his meeting with Freud, when apparently the two men discussed calling the unconscious 'psychoid', as well as a review of Jung's more mature ideas concerning a psychoid unconscious. I propose to argue that even at the time of their meeting, Jung had already formulated an epistemological approach that was significantly different from that of Freud and that clearly foreshadowed his later ideas as set out in On the Nature of the Psyche.
