Leguminous Seedborne Pathogens: Seed Health and Sustainable Crop Management

Abstract: Pulses have gained popularity over the past few decades due to their use as a source of protein in food and their favorable impact on soil fertility. Despite being essential to modern agriculture, these species face a number of challenges, such as agronomic crop management and threats from plant seed pathogens. This review’s goal is to gather information on the distribution, symptomatology, biology, and host range of seedborne pathogens. Important diagnostic techniques are also discussed as a part of a success… Show more

“…Moreover, some seed-borne microbial agents are pathogenic and can afflict seed viability and germination vigor. Their transmission to seedlings is a major cause of disease outbreaks and crop yield loss [9,10]. This is particularly critical in the case of endophytic localization of pathogens because seed treatments are not effective.…”

“…This is particularly critical in the case of endophytic localization of pathogens because seed treatments are not effective. Moreover, the increasingly restrictive ban on the use of pesticides makes it necessary to seek alternative solutions to control the sanitary quality of the seed [9][10][11][12].…”

“…The production of other legume crops has increased in a similar way. Legume bacterial diseases cause yield losses of up to 50%, and dramatically impact economic revenues and food security [ 2 , 3 ]. Therefore, the development of innovative approaches for the early detection and prevention of possible bacterial infections in legume crops is a task of high priority.…”

“…However, these crops are consistently facing formidable challenges from diseases initiated by a diverse array of pathogens, encompassing fungi, bacteria and viruses. The presence of these pathogens collectively poses a significant threat to the long-term health and productivity of leguminous crops (Dell'Olmo et al, 2023). These diseases present a significant risk to the economic feasibility and nutritional stability of agriculture.…”
