Legume‐associated residual cyst

Abstract: This report describes three unique cases of residual cyst (RC) which were characterized by large legume implants. To determine whether these represented a distinctive RC subset or if implanted materials have general importance in RC pathogenesis, a retrospective comparison of these cases and 37 further RCs with 40 control periapical cysts was performed. The frequency of foreign material implantation and the associated histopathologic features were assessed. No significant differences were noted suggesting that… Show more

“…), and only a few retrospective studies are available (Talacko & Radden , Marcussen et al . , Philipsen & Reichart ). Therefore, the objective of the present investigation was to determine the frequency of HRGs in a large case series of inflammatory odontogenic cysts.…”

“…[5] In the literature, a total of 170 cases of oral and extra oral cases of pulse granuloma have been reported. [18] Out of these 41 cases have been reported in the cystic walls and among these 33 cases are associated with inflammatory odontogenic cyst[235131921] and only eight cases are associated with odontogenic cyst, out of this two cases of dentigerous cyst[216] three cases of nasopalatine cyst[3817] and three cases of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (odontogenic keratocyst) have been reported. [3] Thus, occurrence of pulse granuloma in wall of odontogenic cyst is a rarity.…”

“…The concept of exogenous origin is based on the implantation of food particles of plant origin, through extraction sockets, deep periodontal pockets, infilled root canals and grossly decayed teeth. [52122] Talacko and Radden hypothesized that once the food gains access to tissues, it is rapidly digested and altered by the host responses. The cellulose moiety of plant foods is indigestible and persists in the form of hyaline material, inciting a chronic granulomatous response.…”

“…chronic mandibular periostitis [1][2][3], giant-cell hyaline angiopathy [2,16,18], HB and giant cells associated with a radicular cyst [4], periostitis and osteitis associated with HB [5], granulomas in edentulous jaws [6], pulse granuloma [7,10,12,14,15,19,21,22,24,26,28,30], oral vegetable granuloma [17], HR granuloma [13,23,27,29,31], le granulome "alimentaire" des maxillares [25], food-induced granuloma [20]and granuloma tissue with giant cells and hyaline change [12]. The report by Hase et al [9] obviously represents a case of oral infection due to Torulopsis glabrata but superimposed on a case of OPHRG.…”
