Left Ventricular Non-Compaction: Review of the Current Diagnostic Challenges and Consequences in Athletes

Abstract: Left ventricular non-compaction (LVNC) is a complex clinical condition with no diagnostic gold standard. At present, there is trepidation about the accuracy of the diagnosis, the correlation to clinical outcomes and the long-term medical management. This article reviews the current imaging criteria, the limitations of echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance and the consequences of LV hypertrabeculation in athletes.

“…Complications ranging from heart failure to sudden death due to arrhythmias, and thromboembolic events have been documented in this disease [17]. Our patient quickly benefited from a curative treatment for her AVRNT with a regular 24-hour Holter ECG follow-up.…”

“…The accuracy of the echocardiographic diagnostic criteria is still under debate. The Chin criteria showed the highest diagnosis rate (79%), compared to the Jenni criteria (64%) and the Stollberger and Finsterer criteria (53%) [10]. Moreover, the correlation between the criteria is weak-only 30% of patients diagnosed with LVNC meet all three criteria [10].…”

Moreover, the correlation between the criteria is weak-only 30% of patients diagnosed with LVNC meet all three criteria [10]. 3D echocardiography can improve the diagnosis, but there are still many limits to echocardiography in detecting LVNC.…”

“…Esto se ha visto en los deportistas de alto rendimiento: los sujetos entrenados presentan significativamente más trabeculaciones que los no entrenados (18,3% vs. 7%) como lo han publicado es sus respectivos trabajos Fermia y Gati. (8,9) 2. La segunda parte de la definición de enfermedad de la OMS expresa "…por causas en general conocidas…".…”
