“…The results of a Price study, 2017 at the Cipto Mangukusumo Hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia, concluded that HIV patients taking antiretroviral therapy were at risk of experiencing heart structure damage after a year of use. Similar to the study conducted by Pombo et al (2013) which found that after a year of ART use, HIV patients experienced left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (16). Research conducted in Germany also concluded the same results where HIV patients who take antiretroviral therapy are at high risk for changes in the left ventricular wall (18).…”

“…Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a predictor of all deaths in the general population 16 . Also, LVH is a predictor of the incidence of cardiovascular disease, where this risk is increased in people infected with HIV (17).…”

“…Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been previously reported to be associated with diastolic LV dysfunction in HIV patients . Age, presence of hypertension, global cardiovascular disease risk, and the use of nevirapine have all been associated with LVH in HIV patients.…”

“…HIV-related factors were categorized as follows: CD4 + cell count (>200 cells/μl and ≤200 cells/μl), HIV viral load (≤400 copies/ml and >400 copies/ml), age at ART initiation (0–5, 6–10 and 11–16 years), duration on ART (≤2 years and >2 years) and age was categorized as 6–10 years and 11–16 years. Antiretroviral drugs, cardiac signs and symptoms, hypertension and chronic lung disease were dichotomized into ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ Zidovudine and nevirapine were selected because of the evidence that zidovudine is associated with development of cardiomyopathy in children and nevirapine is associated with LVH in adults [ 28 , 29 ]. Clinical factors evaluated include cardiac signs and symptoms, hypertension and chronic lung disease.…”
