Left Ventricular Filling and Emptying Patterns in Anemia due to Beta Thalassemia

Abstract: Patterns of left ventricular (LV) filling and emptying were studied in 17 patients with chronic anemia due to beta thalassemia and in 8 normal subjects. M-mode echocardio-grams were recorded in each patient and digitization and computer analysis of the tracings provided data relating to the systolic and diastolic performance of the LV. LV diameter was increased. The rate, pattern and time relationships of LV systolic emptying were normal or increased in patients with thalassemia especially in those with thalas… Show more

“…In addition, we must bear in mind that the examination of the segmen tal LV function is not a very sensitive method in cases with selective hypokincsis, where the boundary between pathological hypokinesis and compensatory hyperkinesis is not always definable. On the other hand, our results concerning LV diastolic filling are rather similar to the findings of Sapoznikov et al [7] who studied diastolic performance by computer assisted echocardiography.…”

“…Recently detected early abnor malities in the diastolic LV performance in a study of 13 thalassémie patients, while Sapoznikov et al [7] in another study of 17 patients do not report similar findings. Possi ble shortcomings of all the above studies are the relatively small number of patients in the scries and.…”
