Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental pollutant that harms different body systems. Previous investigations indicated that BPA exposure is linked to renal dysfunction. Among carotenoids, lycopene (Lyc) is one of the strongest antioxidants. This work was conducted to assess the potential protective benefits of Lyc on oxidative stress and biochemical and histological abnormalities induced by BPA in the kidney. Adult male rats were divided into: control group, Lyc group (4 mg/kg /day), BPA group (50 mg/kg/day), and Lyc-BPA group. The agents were given orally for eight weeks. BPA induced a marked increment in malondialdehyde (MDA) and a marked decrement in the superoxide dismutase (SOD) level. A marked rise in creatinine and urea levels was also reported. Marked histopathological alterations were demonstrated in the renal cortex. Atrophy of the renal corpuscles, dilated tubules with degenerated epithelium, dilated congested cortical renal blood vessels, and cellular infiltration were demonstrated. Up-regulation of the immune expression of desmin and down-regulation of Bcl2 were also detected. Interestingly, co-administration of Lyc and BPA ameliorated to a great extent most of the biochemical and histopathological alterations induced by BPA. In conclusion, BPA had a harmful impact on the kidney of rats and Lyc protected against renal damage through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects.

Supernumerary kidney (SNK) is a rare congenital anatomical variation usually detected incidentally via imaging. Although a random finding, it may present with hydronephrosis, calculi or malignancy. Both its vascularization and its drainage vary significantly, depending on its location and shape. Riedel's lobe is a normal, though rare, variant of liver anatomy presenting either as a downward projection of the inferior border of the right liver lobe or as a triangular pyramidoid projection to the right of the gallbladder.We present a case of a 71-year-old man who was initially admitted to the hospital for backache. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed the simultaneous occurrence of a left supernumerary kidney and Riedel's lobe. The SNK lay caudally to the normal kidney, it was supplied by a branch of the superior mesenteric artery and its drainage was supported by a bifid ureter. The Riedel's lobe represented the "tongue-like" variant without causing any symptoms to the patient.Both entities should be monitored carefully, as their presence may require surgical management should they raise a sequence of symptoms or, as in this case, modify the surgical plans in the context of other coexisting medical events.

Supernumerary kidneys, also known as accessory kidneys, refer to the presence of more than two kidneys. It is a rare congenital abnormality of the urinary system with only a few cases reported so far in literature. The extra kidney commonly has its own collecting system, blood supply, and well-defined encapsulated tissue. It may or may not be fused to the other kidneys by fibrous tissue or a parenchymal bridge. Imaging for vague abdominal symptoms may result in an incidental finding of the rare anatomical variant which may indicate an adjustment of routine physical activities to avoid renal trauma, as well as relevant considerations for surgical planning. We present a 62-year-old woman who presented with vague abdominal pains. Findings on physical examination were unremarkable. Her abdominal ultrasound scan showed two kidneys of about the same size fused together. Computed tomography urography showed two fused renal tissues of nearly same size on the left. The accessory kidney is more medial, slightly cranial. The native kidney is more lateral and more caudal. The native and accessory kidneys had only one blood supply, venous drainage, and a single ureter. As at the time of reporting, the patient has not received any intervention because there was no remarkable symptom noted. This case is rare and unique, in that it is a fused supernumerary kidney seen at the age of 62 and has a single blood supply and ureter. Imaging for vague symptoms can result in an incidental finding of a rare anatomical variant. It is also very essential for planning surgical intervention if need be.
