Left atrial volume and function in patients with Behcet's disease assessed by real-time three-dimensional echocardiography

Abstract: Our study has shown that LA mechanical functions and volumes are impaired in BD. These results may be an early form of subclinical cardiac involvement in patients with BD who have no clinical evidence for cardiovascular disease.

“…Cardiac involvement can manifest with apparent symptoms or can be subclinical. In recent studies, P wave abnormalities have been demonstrated in patients with BD (9,10,18 Data are expressed as mean±standard deviation and median (minimum-maximum). BMI -body mass index, DBP-diastolic blood pressure, LVDd -left ventricular diastolic diameter, LVEF -left ventricular ejection fraction, LVM-left ventricular mass; LVMI -left ventricular mass index, LVSd -left ventricular systolic diameter, msec-millisecond; mm-millimeters, Pmax -maximum P wave duration, Pmin -minimum P wave duration, PD -P wave dispersion, SBP -systolic blood pressure of tachyarrhythmia encountered in clinical practice and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality (19).…”

“…In recent studies, atrial involvement has shown in patients with BD. Aktürk et al (21) found that LA mechanical functions and volumes were impaired in BD who have no clinical evidence for cardiovascular disease. In a study of Karabağ et al (22) atrial electromechanical delay (EMD) duration, a non-invasive predictor of AF, were investigated in patients with BD and interatrial and intra-atrial EMD found to be increased in patients with BD compared with the control group.…”

“…It was recognized that cardiac and arterial complications occur and are an important part in the complications of BD [1,4,7,[14][15][16]. Cardiac involvement in BD is frequent but is usually mild and asymptomatic.…”

“…In referred patients electrocardiography, echocardiography and, when used, computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging analysis detect subtle cardiac changes in about one third of cases (they are listed in Table 1). It is, therefore, assumed that minor cardiac complications occur in around a third of patients with BD [1,[14][15][16][17]. As in other systemic complications, which are part of the diagnostic criteria, the cardiac pathology of BD is not specific.…”
