Left- and right-circularly polarized light-sensing based on colored and mechano-responsive chiral nematic liquid crystals

Abstract: A liquid crystal host-guest system composed of achiral organic molecules (host) and colored chiral metal complexes (guest) was fabricated to sense both right- and left-handed circularly polarized light (r- and l-CPL), depending on the guest (dopant) concentration. The CPL-sensing can be reversibly turned on and off upon mechanical stress and heating.

“…Chiral photonic materials that are capable of responsive selective reflection of circularly polarized light are interesting in some respects, as they enable new technologies such as camouflaging, smart wearable devices, and remote monitoring of the mechanical strain of implants . Efforts have been made to developing chiral photonic materials with tunable selective reflection of circularly polarized light and long‐term stability in coloration . Elegantly designed copolymer films based on a liquid crystal unit and a chiral side chain exhibited circularly polarized light by selective reflection.…”

“…Moreover, the UC‐CPL emission of CsPbBr 3 PKNCs and the photonic bandgap of N*LC could be recovered by applying mechanical force. [ 24 ] Thus, a voltage‐force regulated chiroptical switch of UC‐CPL was realized with great stability (Figure 4d; and Figure S8, Supporting Information).…”

“…[ 12c ] Through evaporation‐induced self‐assembly (EISA), the liquid crystal suspension can be consolidated into cholesteric CNC films which selectively reflect left‐handed circularly polarized light (CPL) and present iridescent structural colors. [ 17 ] According to Bragg's law, the reflectance wavelength depends on the pitch of the helical structure and the average refractive index. [ 18 ] Security features using polarization‐dependent structural colors and selective swelling patterns have been developed based on cholesteric CNCs.…”
