LED-based field radiometer for sensor web in-situ measurements

Abstract: We have developed a multi-band ground viewing radiometer based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to create a self-calibrating sensing system for land-based measurements. The system is intended for in-situ data collection needed for vicarious calibration, using the reflectance-based method, for earth observing satellites. An autonomous prototype radiometer, which is part of a sensor web of 5 radiometers which could be geographically distributed over hundreds of meters, has been realized. Temporally continuous in-… Show more

“…LEDs are highly sensitive to their emission spectra (Mims 1992, Tymecki et al 2009, Bui and Hauser 2013, Taralli et al 2015. Therefore, a PEDD strip configuration with cold white as both the emitter and detector yielded the highest signal, as observed in figure 4(a).…”

“…In a radiation sensor, often a matched source of radiation is also needed to excite a physical phenomenon (as, for example, in [ 21 ]), with reference purpose (as in [ 18 ]), or for other use [ 24 , 25 ]. For this reason, we examined the emission properties of many LEDs.…”

“…As a practical example, Figure 6 shows four matched source-detector LED couples that were chosen for our realization of a self-calibrating radiometer based on LEDs used both as radiation-detecting devices and reference sources for the calibration [ 18 , 19 ].…”
