Following our recent lectotypification (with a specimen from G-DC) of the name Senecio praealtus Bertol. var. borysthenicus DC. validated by de Candolle based on Andrzejowski's and Besser's specimens from Ukraine, we provide here information on additional original specimens of that taxon (KW: Besser and Turczaninow historical collections), which is now recognized as Jacobaea borysthenica (DC.) B.Nord. & Greuter and which was until recently widely accepted as Senecio borysthenicus (DC.) Andrz. ex Czern. (Asteraceae). In particular, there are two isolectotypes in KW collected by Andrzejowski near Kyslyakivka (now Lymany, Mykolayiv Region, Ukraine), as well as some other specimens collected near Zaporizhzhya (Andrzejowski) and in southern Podolia (Besser and/or Andrzejowski). Some related Eastern European taxa of the taxonomically complicated Jacobaea vulgaris Gaertn. (= Senecio jacobaea L.) aggregate and misapplied names are discussed as well. The identity of the name Senecio divaricatus Andrz. (nom. illeg., non L.) is clarified; it is a synonym of Jacobaea borysthenica. It is also confirmed that Senecio podolianus Panigrahi is an illegitimate replacement name for S. borysthenicus. Jacobaea borysthenica seems to be closely related to J. andrzejowskyi (Tzvelev) B.Nord. & Greuter and J. vulgaris subsp. pannonica Hodálová & Mered'a; the two latter taxa morphologically differ from J. borysthenica but are very similar to each other and may be even conspecific. Further studies are needed for clarifying the complex evolutionary and biogeographical patterns within the J. vulgaris aggregate in Eastern Europe and adjacent areas.

The proper type designation of the name Camelina microcarpa Andrz. ex DC. (Brassicaceae) is discussed. This taxon is currently considered to be a wild relative and possible progenitor of the oilseed crop Camelina sativa (L.) Crantz, and thus the proper typification of the name C. microcarpa is important for further germplasm research and improvement of the crop species. At present, several (at least four) specimens deposited in herbaria G-DC, KW, and LE, are listed in literature and/or annotated in herbaria or online databases as the type (holotype or lectotype) of C. microcarpa. The original material deposited in G-DC [G00203789] is accepted here as the holotype of C. microcarpa because it appears to be the only original element used by Candolle when preparing his description of the new taxon. Isotypes from the Besser herbarium at the National Herbarium of Ukraine in Kyiv (KW-BESS) are discussed and illustrated. It is concluded that the holotype from G-DC and two well-preserved isotypes from KW-BESS [KW001003103, KW001003104] are sufficient for precise morphology-based application of the name C. microcarpa. Our analysis provided evidence that original material was collected by Andrzejowski no later than 1818 in the Podolian Governorate of the former Russian Empire, most probably in the eastern part of Moldova or adjacent southwestern parts of Ukraine, along the Dnister (Nistru, Dniester) River between the present-day town of Camenca (Kamenka) and the confluence of the Dnister and Yagorlyk (Iagorlîc) rivers, probably on limestone outcrops. It means that the type of C. microcarpa may belong to the southern Ukrainian populations, which are genetically different from northern and central Ukrainian ones; however, further field and molecular studies are needed because more than one genotype may in fact occur in that area.

Type collections of plants and fungi in Ukraine: realities and prospects

For the stability of the nomenclature of biological organisms an important condition is the presence and preservation of type specimens of the described taxa. The type specimens of plants and fungi typically are accumulated and stored in herbaria of specialized scientific institutions (e.g. botanical gardens and universities) or natural history museums. In Ukraine, there are nearly 80 herbaria of various volumes of collections but only 22 of them have type materials of taxa of different ranks, which were described from the territory of Ukraine and the world. The article includes a quantitative assessment of type materials of Ukrainian herbaria and emphasizes their role in regional and global biodiversity surveys. On the basis of own research of the Ukrainian herbarium fund, the estimation of preservation conditions of type specimens of plants and fungi and their collections in Ukraine is given, and the prospects of functioning of these collections are considered.
