“…It is assumed that chrome-tanned leather is more resistant to fungal attack than vegetable-tanned leather owing to the presence of chromium oxide. However, most historical leather objects are regularly greased, therefore the difference between the conditions for development of microorganisms is reduced (Falkiewicz-Dulik, 2015;IAEA, 2017), which was also observed in this study for leather shoes.…”

“…A similar number of fungi and a larger number of bacteria were found on the spots on the degraded collagenous materials on tested shoes than on the fabric, cardboard, and wooden elements on shoes from the museum (Rybitwa et al, 2020;Wawrzyk et al, 2020). The average concentration of bacteria obtained in this study was lower, and the one of fungi was similar to that of microorganisms inhabiting leather shoes of prisoners from the collection of the State Museum at Majdanek, Poland, which also originate from the period of World War II (Perkowski and Goździecki, 2002;Falkiewicz-Dulik, 2015).…”

“…(4% of the total bacterial microbiota) and the sporulating Bacillus sp. Among this last genus are species with high proteolytic activity that may be responsible for the deterioration of parchment [10,28,29] and have been identified in similar studies [10]. This genus accounts for circa 1% of the total bacterial microbiota.…”

“…Both may be responsible for the purple stains as a result of the very common pigmentation of these species. Contamination by halophile bacteria such as these can come from salt used for preservation, [10,28] and their presence has been integrated in a microbial succession theory [19].…”

“…In particularly, tanning stage is the primary step, which the animal hides are turn into leather and several techniques are currently being used such as vegetable tanning, smoke tanning and chromium tanning. However, the use of chromium salts is known to be the most effective technique and it is widely applied in worldwide tanning industry as it enhances several properties of leather to make it better, such as providing higher thermal stability and strength and making it lighter weight (Falkiewicz-Dulík, 2015;Nashy and Eid, 2019).…”
