This study investigates challenges of enactment teachers notice when analyzing artifacts of teaching in a professional development focused on supporting the enactment of NGSS‐aligned modeling instruction. Five secondary science teachers participated in a semester‐long video club. Transcripts of the segments of their meetings in which they analyzed artifacts of practice were coded to characterize what they noticed in videos and student work samples from their own and others’ classrooms of students engaging in sensemaking. Through an inductive and iterative approach, three main linguistic challenges were identified related to the teachers’ noticing of students’ disciplinary thinking: learning how to communicate with precision using modeling conventions, how to communicate with precision using scientific vocabulary, and how to support students explaining and defending their models. The findings of this study extend and affirm prior research on teachers’ noticing of student thinking by highlighting the integrated nature of disciplinary noticing and the entanglement of learning science concepts and the language of science. The results also indicate that artifact‐rich professional development designed to improve science teachers’ interpretation of their students’ thinking can support teachers as they work through problems of practice they encounter in their attempts to enact responsive science teaching.

Dünyada yaklaşık 3000 bilim merkezi bulunmaktadır. Bu bilim merkezlerini her yıl yüzlerce milyon kişi ziyaret etmektedir. Bu ziyaretçilerin önemli bir kısmını ise okul çağındaki çocuklar oluşturmaktadır. Bilim merkezleri okul öncesi eğitimden yükseköğretime kadar her kademede yer alan çeşitli derslerde yararlanılabilecek formal bir öğenme ortamı olduğu gibi hayat boyu öğrenme kapsamında ele alınabilcek informal öğrenme ortamlarından da biridir. Ancak mevcut bilim merkezlerinde sosyal bilimlere ilişkin içeriklere çok az yer verildiği görülmektedir. Bu durum ise toplumda bilim algısının eksik veya yanlış şekilde oluşmasına aynı zamanda farklı sosyal bilimlere ilişkin derslerde bu mekânlardan yeterince yararlanamamasına neden olmaktadır. Bu kapsamda araştırmanın amacı öğretmenlerin bilim, bilim merkezi ve sosyal bilimlere ilişkin görüşlerini tespit etmek ve bilim merkezlerine sosyal bilimlerin nasıl entegre edilebileceğine ilişkin düşüncelerini ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden biri olan olgubilim kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu ortaokul, sosyal bilimler lisesi, bilim ve sanat merkezi, fen ve anadolu liselerinde görev yapmakta olan sosyal bilgiler, tarih, coğrafya, Türk dili ve edebiyatı, felsefe grubu, Türkçe branşlarından 25 öğretmen oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma grubunun belirlenmesinde ölçüt örnekleme yönteminden yararlanılmış, katılımcılarda aranan temel ölçüt ise bilim merkezini öğrencileriyle birlikte ziyaret etmiş olmasıdır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerden yararlanılmıştır. Veriler nitel veri analiz tekniklerinden betimsel ve içerik analizi ile çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular bütüncül bir betimlemeyle yorumlanmış ve katılımcılardan edinilen doğrudan alıntılarla desteklenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda katılımcıların, Türkiye’de sosyal bilimlere yeterince değer verilmediğini, bilim merkezlerinde sosyal bilimlere ilişkin içeriklere içeriklerin bulunmadığını, hâlihazırdaki bilim merkezlerinin sosyal bilimler içerikleriyle yeniden düzenlenebileceğini düşündükleri tespit edilmiştir.
