Learning to read at an early age: Case study of a Dutch boy

Abstract: The author wishes to express his thanks to Mrs S Tonkens-Hart who corrected the English. The test person, the son of the authors of this article, David de Graaf, was born on February 29th, 1984. To better illustrate his point of departure at the time of the start of the reading programme, we quote a test with the Bayley Developmental Scales (2-30) he was subjected to. It was carried out on April 28th, 1987 by a staff member of the

“…In short, the performance of the conventionally trained group seems to support the affirmations from many authors proposing that children with DS have special difficulties to acquire logical-mathematical concepts (Graaf 1997;Gijón 2000). However, the results of the multimedia-trained group suggest that the reason that people with DS present problems in retaining mathematical concepts is not due to impossibility per se, but a methodology not adjusted to their characteristics and necessities.…”

“…The main goal of this study was to determine whether or not computer-assisted teaching facilitates the learning process of basic mathematical abilities in children with DS, as compared with a penciland-paper-based teaching method. If this is the case, it would call into question the widely accepted idea about their special difficulties in mathematics (Carr 1988;Byrne et al 1995;Graaf 1997;Gijón 2000).…”

“…Some case studies suggest that teaching young children with Down syndrome to read promotes oral language development, particularly in the production of words or sentences which are first introduced in their written form (de Graaf, 1993 ;Duffen, 1976). In a longitudinal study with a group of fourteen children with Down syndrome, Laws, Buckley, Bird, MacDonald and Broadley (1995) found that those who could read made more progress on oral language measures than those who could not read.…”

“…A more positive picture is beginning to emerge, however, as attention is drawn to increasing numbers of children and adults with Down syndrome who are successful at and enjoy mathematical activities (e.g. Caycho, Gunn, & Seigal, 1991;de Graaf & de Graaf-Posthumus, 1997;Monari-Martinez, 1998, 1999.…”
