Learning through Assessment and Feedback Practices: A Critical Review of Engineering Education Settings

Abstract: 'Assessment' and 'feedback' are inherently embedded in a course curriculum of engineering education settings. These components are indispensable for the teachinglearning processes. It is observed that engineering faculty members do not require any 'teacher-training' to join the engineering institutions across the globe. Hence, they may not have adequate experience in assessing students' performances and providing feedback to students. Only a few research studies have been carried out on assessment and feedback… Show more

“…For the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences, the students did not have access to memoranda to check the marking, there was no specification table for assessments, and no statistical analysis of students’ results. Similar results were recorded in a study by Subheesh & Sethy [ 15 ] where the study emphasised the importance of assessment and feedback practices in achieving programme goals and objectives and ensuring programme quality. Assessment practices change over time in response to changes in programme course curriculum and instructional design in educational programmes.…”

“…To deal with the ever-changing terrain of health sciences education, module course teachers must learn and implement effective assessment practices and types of feedback that motivate and inspire students to achieve modular course learning outcomes. However, most engineering faculty members around the world have little or no experience developing measurable course objectives, assessing student performance, and giving adequate and straightforward feedback to students [ 15 ]. As a result, Subheesh and Sethy [ 15 ] recommended that staff members seek help from educational experts to learn about efficient assessment and feedback strategies and encourage staff members from time to time to attend teacher-training programmes on instructional design, student assessment, and feedback practices.…”

“…Lebih jauh, penilaian memandu guru untuk mengevaluasi kinerja mengajar yang mereka tawarkan kepada siswa. Saat menilai kinerja siswa, guru perlu mempersiapkan instrumen yang tepat (Subheesh & Sethy, 2020). Instrumen penilaian merupakan alat penilaian yang digunakan guru untuk mendokumentasikan seluruh aktivitas siswa sehingga bukti kompetensi siswa dapat terkumpul dengan baik (Covacevich, 2014).…”

“…'Assessment' is an integral part of a course curriculum (Subheesh & Sethy, 2020). It is an essential component of teaching-learning processes that influences both learners and teachers (Dziob et al, 2018).…”
