Learning theories for artificial intelligence promoting learning processes

Abstract: This paper discusses a three‐level model that synthesizes and unifies existing learning theories to model the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting learning processes. The model, drawn from developmental psychology, computational biology, instructional design, cognitive science, complexity and sociocultural theory, includes a causal learning mechanism that explains how learning occurs and works across micro, meso and macro levels. The model also explains how information gained through learning is … Show more

“…AI techniques have potential to stimulate and advance instructional and learning sciences. More recently a three- level model that synthesizes and unifies existing learning theories to model the roles of AIs in promoting learning process has been proposed [ 26 ]. The different components of our study rely upon these paradigms and learning theories as the theoretical underpinning.…”

“…To discuss the changes in the content and the teaching methods of higher education in its complexity, Gibson et al (2023), for example, propose a model that can capture the effects of AI at three levels: in supporting (1) the individual (micro level), in which the role of AI is to support individual learners, develop personalized learning pathways and strategies, and enhance individual knowledge and skills; (2) the community (meso level), when the focus is on learning processes, collaboration, knowledge sharing and community knowledge building of teams, peer groups and knowledge communities; and (3) the cultural learning processes (macro), when we look at the role of AI from a socio-cultural development perspective.…”

“…Accordingly, as information technology continues to transform into a cognitive tool, Activity Theory can assist in analyzing the role of computers within a social and cultural context (Tan, 2019). With AI advancing into the micro, meso, and macro levels of the learning process (Gibson et al, 2023), Activity Theory provides an appropriate illustration of the dynamic interactions and contradictions associated with AIED (H. . Therefore, by anchoring on the collective activity system of Engeström's (2000Engeström's ( , 2007, the AIED design process can be clearly explained.…”
