Learning from the problems of problem-based learning

Abstract: BackgroundThe last decade has witnessed a rapid expansion of biomedical knowledge. Despite this, fashions in medical education over the same period have shifted away from factual (didactic) teaching and towards contextual, or problem-based, learning (PBL). This paradigm shift has been justified by studies showing that PBL improves reasoning and communication while being associated with few if any detectable knowledge deficits.DiscussionAnalysis of the literature indicates that the recent rapid rise of PBL has … Show more

“…But sometimes implementation is difficult because a PBL tutorial-based curriculum requires much time, expense, and staff. 6 The most important aspect is to change the current lecture-based curriculum to a PBL tutorial-based core curriculum, like the dental learning package (DLP) instituted at Adelaide University. 7 However, this change will require a lot of time in Japan because of the individual special department system.…”

“…3 Training of medical providers has often been conducted through apprenticeships rather than formalized education. 4 The R25 grants promoted the implementation or enhancement of an evidence-based approach to CAM medical education, including use of the evidence pyramid to incorporate traditional forms of evidence along with critical thinking skills and clinical best practices.…”

“…In contrast, problem-based learning (PBL) was designed to incorporate several educational strategies that would optimize student-centered learning outcomes beyond just knowledge acquisition. It emerged in the late 80s and early 90s due to problems in building the appropriate competencies in medical graduates exposed to didactic teaching, but its rapid acceptance was propelled more by the rapid explosion of biomedical information than by the drive to improve the students' ability to reason and communicate [2] .…”
