Learning from the Past in the Transition to Open-Pollinated Varieties

Abstract: In Nepal, hybrid seed introduction caused major yield gains in agricultural production, but at high environmental costs. The development of high-yielding open-pollinated varieties has spurred hope for more sustainable production systems. Nepal’s government is interested in boosting their use. This research aimed to identify farmer perceptions on the factors behind the past adoption of hybrid seeds in order to propose guidelines to support the diffusion of open-pollinated varieties. Using in-depth interviews, a… Show more

“…However Paudel et al (2020) , suggest that this policy may not be adequate to enable increased adoption and the sustained use of appropriate farming machinery in Nepal without other support mechanisms. This includes a need for renewed focus on extension efforts to overcome exposure gaps with potential adopters and access to infrastructure, without which subsidy programs will primarily benefit larger, wealthier farmers and disadvantage resource poor smallholder farmers in Nepal ( Freshley and Delgado-Serrano, 2020 ).…”

“…This aligns with Subedi et al . (2017), Freshley and Delgado-Serrano (2020) and Pavithra et al (2018)’s findings that the popularity of open-pollinated varieties among smallholder farmers is attributed to open-pollinated varieties being less costly, require fewer inputs and the increasing interest in promoting it by government.…”

“…In Mexico, the use of conventional hybrids is not adopted on a large scale due to several factors, such as the high cost of acquiring the seed (García-Salazar and Guzmán-Soria, 2015). They are developed for flat areas and fertile agricultural lands (Freshley and Delgado-Serrano, 2020), lack of infrastructure, high demand for inputs and lack of adaptation to diverse environments (Pixley, 2006;García-Salazar y Guzmán-Soria, 2015). Furthermore, there are diverse conditions of climate, rugged orography and soil types that create a mega diversity of environments, micro-regions and ecological niches (Muñoz et al, 2009), conditions in which conventional hybrids do not thrive.…”
