“…Islands also offer opportunities for the teaching of sustainability subjects as they are among the most vulnerable places on Earth due to their greater susceptibility to environmental threats, like climate change and socioeconomic challenges (Kueffer and Kinney, 2017;Russell and Kueffer, 2019;Poti et al, 2022). For this reason, several studies even entail them as models for addressing sustainability studies, which may then be replicated in continental areas (Kueffer and Kinney, 2017;Poti et al, 2022).…”

“…However, even in the most productive season for green turtle nesting in Watamu, the number of nests (n = 81 clutches) was small compared to some oceanic island rookeries in the Western Indian Ocean, such as the Diego Garcia Atoll (n ≈ 6,500) or Mohéli (n ≈ 10,000; Bourjea et al, 2015a; Mortimer et al, 2020). Nevertheless, it is thought that such island rookeries are potentially more susceptible to the detrimental effects of climate change and socio-economic changes (Poti et al, 2022), and continental rookeries such as Watamu could play an important role in maintaining regional populations and could act as flagships for coastal conservation. The remigration intervals and clutch frequencies presented here are based on field observations rather than models, and they will enable better population assessments across the region (Jackson et al, 2008).…”

“…Buano Island is designated as a conservation area, so efforts to conserve the surrounding ecosystem, especially mangrove forests, are essential. Including mangroves on small islands significantly enhances the ability of these fragile islands to adapt, as indicated by Poti et al (2022) and Techera (2023). Small islands are very vulnerable and fragile.…”
