Learning activities on health care supported by common sense knowledge

Abstract: This paper discusses how common sense knowledge can be used by teachers for planning Learning Activities on health care. Using common sense statements which were automatically collected, we are developing software that can be used to support the teaching and learning process, in a more contextualized form. When teachers consider the knowledge that learners already have, taking into account their common sense knowledge, they can devote their attention to correcting misconceptions, covering ignored topics and av… Show more

“…The proposal of Cognitor is that teachers who have little experience in producing web-based learning material can easily develop their learning material to be published on the web or in digital media, having the support of common sense knowledge and an e-Learning Pattern Language for reaching pedagogical issues in the content generated, such as culture sensitivity [1][2], which is especially important to teachers who work in extensive countries like Brazil, and who consequently deal with learners from different regions and cultures.…”

“…This feature was incorporated in OMCS-Br since it is known that common sense varies from group to group of people, inserted in different cultural context [1][2] [13]. The profile parameters which can be used to filter the knowledge from the knowledge base and to generate different ConceptNets are: age, gender, level of education and geographical location (city and state where volunteer are from).…”

“…For example, through common sense knowledge analysis, educators can know how their learners talk about themes which are going to be taught, so that they can decide on how to approach those themes during the learning process [2]. Also, if educators have to prepare learners on how to deal with a certain community, they can access the community's common sense and prepare their learners to interact with that group [1]. Furthermore educators can use common sense knowledge to elaborate contextualized learning content which can be presented in several forms to learners, varying from a hyper document [10] to a card of an educational quiz game [11].…”

“…In its first phase, it was developed a set of DL tools for the LMS and it was played several learning activities on it in order to perform a proof of concept (TIDIA, 2008). One of the learning activities played on the environment was the learning activity "Guaranteeing the continuity of home caring a sick person", which was planned by professors from the Nursing Department of the Federal University of São Carlos in the context of a case study whose main goal was to illustrate the possible usages for common sense knowledge to support learning activity planning (Carvalho et al, 2007;Carvalho et al, 2008).…”
