Learning about the past through situatedness, embodied exploration and digital augmentation of cultural heritage sites

Abstract: The design of interactive experiences for archaeological sites entails the consideration of particular characteristics and constraints of the exhibition space. Our aim is to address these challenges by exploring the potential of a recently emerging interaction paradigm called World-as-Support, which is based on projective Augmented Reality (AR). In this study, we present the design process of a virtual heritage experience for a bomb shelter built during the Spanish Civil War and that currently belongs to the H… Show more

“…Previous studies during the last decade, e.g. the use of AR children to imagine certain artifacts and situations related to historical contexts [27], have shown us the perceived enjoyment and usefulness of AR technology in CH contexts [28] as well as enhanced customer value [29]. The presented study provides data that confirm the particular timeliness of mobile AR usage among cultural sites.…”

“…A literature review was conducted focused on multisensory applications in CH, with VR and/or AR, among the last decades. Most common multisensory applications are indoor and based on VR [19], [25]- [27], but some interesting AR installations alluding to multisensory experiences are found, such as the "Multisensory Art Gallery", at the Tate Britain art gallery in London, United Kingdom [28], the "Refugi 307" bomb shelter, from the Spanish Civil War [29], and the mobile multisensory AR project M5SAR in Faro, Portugal [30].…”
