Evolution of the concept of chemical equilibrium has been strongly influenced by Newtonian mechanics. Even in the late nineteenth century scientists viewed chemical equilibrium as resulting from an equality of the contending forces, that is, the forward and the reverse reactions. The main purpose of this article is to show that freshman students conceptualize the rates of the forward and reverse reactions in chemical equilibrium as forces, perhaps in the same sense as used in the evolution of the concept of chemical equilibrium and student misconceptions about Newton's third law of motion. Results obtained show that at least some students consider the forward and reverse reactions as a sort of chemical analogue of Newton's third law of motion. Based on this interpretation, it is plausible to hypothesize that student conceptualization of the forward and reverse reactions as forces is ontogenetically (Piaget & Garcia, 1983) a step towards the deeper understanding of a dynamic chemical equilibrium, leading to a progressive 'problemshift' (Lakatos, 1970).In spite of the eommonalities between psychogenesis and the history of science, it is important to point out that ontogenesis is not an exact and detailed recapitulation of phylogenesis. Results obtained in this study and their interpretation are important, as they help us to anticipate student utilization of Newton's third law in understanding chemical equilibrium, before the dynamic nature of equilibrium is understood.

Abstrak : Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang analisis miskonsepsi mahasiswa pada empat aspek esensial pada kesetimbangan kimia. Subyek dalam penelitian ini adalah Mahasiswa semester pertama Program Studi Pendidikan Kimia FKIP Unram. Pengambilan data dilakukan dengan memberikan tes tentang kesetim-bangan kimia yang memuat empat aspek, yaitu stoikhiometri, tetapan kesetimbangan, kesetimbangan yang melibatkan hukum gas ideal, dan pergeseran kesetimbangan/ prinsip Le Chatelier's pada sistem kesetimbangan heterogen. Berdasarkan analisis miskonsepsi mahasiswa pada empat aspek esensial kesetimbangan kimia, yaitu: konsep mol dan stoikhiometri (30,10%), tetapan kesetimbangan (22,85%), konsep kesetimbangan yang melibatkan gas ideal (78,55%) dan pada konsep pergeseran kestimbangan/ prinsip Le Chatelier's pada reaksi heterogen (70,78%). Miskonsepsi pada aspek stoikhiometri terutama adalah kegagalan dalam mengkonversi hubungan gram-mol-liter (14,3%), perhitungan zat-zat yang terlibat dalam reaksi (28,6%) dan mengidentifikasi pereaksi berlebih (71,4%). Miskonsepsi pada aspek tetapan kesetimbangan adalah pernyataan persamaan Kc (17,1%), penggunaan satuan mol dalam menghitung nilai Kc (28,6%). Miskonsepsi pada aspek kesetimbangan yang melibatkan gas ideal adalah kegagalan dalam menghitung jumlah mol berdasarkan persamaan gas ideal (82,9%), dan mengartikan hukum tersebut (74,2%). Miskonsepsi pada aspek pergeseran kesetimbangan/prinsip Le Chatelier's adalah melibatkan zat padat pada perhitungan Kc (57,1%), pengaruh zat padat pada kesetimbangan (82,8%), pengaruh gas NH 3 (68,6%), dan pengaruh gas inert N 2 padfa V,T tetap sebesar 80%. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa miskonsepsi mahasiswa dalam memahami topik kesetimbangan kimia adalah aspek prinsip Le Chatelier, reaksi kesetimbangan yang melibatkan gas ideal, stoikhiometri dan tetapan Kc Kata kunci : Miskonsepsi mahasiswa,empat topik esensial, kesetimbangan kimia Analysis of Students' Misconception in Four Essential Concepts of Chemical EquilibriumAbstract : The research related with analysis of students' misconception on four essential aspects on the chemical equilibrium has been conducted. The purpose of this research was to determine science student teachers' level of knowledge about the anatomical structure of two sensory organs, the eye and the ear, in addition to vision and hearing processes. Conducted with 86 science student teachers, research utilized drawing methods and open-ended questions as data collection instruments. The results showed that when science student teachers' answers with regard to vision and its structures compared with their answers concerning hearing and its structures, their success rate was higher for hearing and its structures. Even though students were sufficiently informed about the anatomical structures constituting eyes and ears, it was observed that a significant percentage of the students were incompetent with regard to their understanding of how seeing and hearing takes place and correctly showing the anatomical structures constituting both eyes and ears on a schema. Human organ/organ system education may contribute to an increase in teaching capacity.
