Learner Characteristics’ Factors and their Relationship with Drop-Out in Distance Learning: The Case of the Arab Open University in Saudi Arabia Riyadh Branch

Abstract: In this study, learner characteristics' factors were examined to predict student withdrawal from, or completion of, university distance education programs. The research model was examined using face-to-face in-depth interviews followed by a pilot sample of 127 students, and then reexamined among a sample of 587 students. A quantitative approach was the dominant technique using factor analysis, followed by discriminant analysis aimed at testing the predictive validity of the distinguished factors in the light o… Show more

“…People are accustomed to conventional means of print materials for educational purposes. Most of the trainers are hired from local universities who are not trained in new technologies (Ibrahim & Van der Heijden, 2019). However, these are the negative impacts associated with distance learning; it can also be of great issue in holographic means of teaching as both are unconventional ways of education.…”

“…ODL methodologies enable reaching large numbers of spatially dispersed learners and permit catering to learners seeking flexible hours for studies. Yet, many researchers worldwide have identified poor completion rates and prolonged time for completion as issues manifested in ODL systems (Ibrahim and Van der Heijden, 2019;Simpson, 2013;Taniguchi and Kaufman, 2005). Literature reveals many studies conducted internationally (Li and Wong, 2019;Radheshyam et al, 2017) as well as locally (Aluwihare and De Silva, 2016;Dedigamuwa and Senanayake, 2012) that identify factors affecting learning and learner support is reported as one such crucial factor.…”

“…In some instances, online learning students were the best compared to those who followed traditional learning (Shachar & Neumann, 2010). Even though most universities have changed their method of education delivery to online, still the majority of students in higher education are learning using face to face conventional methods (Ibrahim et al, 2007). According to Razeeth et al (2019), the higher education system has been advancing with time and technological progress.…”
