Learned Helplessness in the Multiple Sclerosis Population

Abstract: students (Dua & Plumer, 1993) and McDermott-Nelson ( 1993) found a negative linear relationship between self-care agency, a construct enabling self-care, and learned helplessness. Certain populations, then, such as those living with chronic illnesses, may experience learned helplessness and helplessness may further complicate disease trajectories, both through direct detrimental health outcomes and also, indirectly by way of cognitive and motivational deficits. In studies of specific disease populations learne… Show more

“…Family is similar to alcoholics enrolling in a 12-step program (40.81 Ϯ 9.34) 32 and unemployed patients with multiple sclerosis (40.7 Ϯ 10.6). 22 This level is only slightly lower than that of patients receiving hemodialysis (41.9 Ϯ 9.71), patients receiving cancer treatment (44.5 Ϯ 6.02), 21 and individuals with cocaine dependence (45.97 Ϯ 9.68). 17 Of the surrogate decisionmakers studied, 50% suffered signifi cant learned helplessness.…”

“…16 Learned helplessness has been described in numerous clinical populations, includ ing individuals with drug dependence 17 or chronic illness. [18][19][20][21][22] It is associated and interwoven with depres sion 23 and worsening physical health. 18,19,22,24,25 We hypothesized that family members of the critically ill are at risk of the development of learned helpless ness as a result of the stressful, uncontrollable expe riences encountered in the ICU.…”

“…A feeling of helplessness can be intensified at this time. Learned helplessness has been studied in the MS population and found to have a relationship with disease status, disease activity, functional and social disability, education and marital and employment status (McGuinnes, 1996). McGuinnes found realistic and achievable goal setting, identifying ele-ments for which there is evidence of control, and realistic plans for the unexpected were important goals for nursing intervention.…”

“…1 Decreased quality of life and feelings of depression among individuals with MS are prevalent. [2][3][4] Reports of depressive symptoms such as "crying more" and having "pessimistic feelings about the future" confirm that elevated emotional distress is common. 5 This is further testimony to the extraordinary impact that MS can have on lifestyle, including maintaining, achieving, or just taking steps toward a balanced, satisfying, or lower-stress life.…”
