Leaky-wave antenna with high gain and wide beam-scanning angle range based on novel SIW-CRLH transmission line

Abstract: A leaky‐wave antenna (LWA) with high gain and wide beam‐scanning angle is proposed in this article using a novel substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) composite left/right‐handed transmission line (CRLH TL). The novel SIW‐CRLH TL is analyzed and the equivalent circuit model is also provided. Considering the continuous phase constant of the balanced SIW‐CRLH TL from negative to positive values, the proposed LWA can obtain a continuous beam steering property from backward to broadside to forward. For verification… Show more

“…Leaky wave antenna (LWA) is a typical traveling wave antenna, which features frequency scanning capability and strong directionality . To date, it has been widely utilized in conformal aircraft, high‐resolution radar, as well as the enclosed space of mobile terminals and other wireless communication devices . Traditional LWA is only amenable to achieve continuous beam scanning in a broad frequency band; however, electronically controlled LWA loaded with tunable devices or materials such as ferrites, diode, and Micro‐Electro‐Mechanical System, (MEMS), is capable of beam steering at a given frequency.…”

“…And LWAs array based on SIW structure was proposed to obtain high efficiency [5,6]. Furthermore, to realize beam scanning from backward to forward, SIW LWAs were designed by periodically loading of transversal and longitudinal slots [7], interdigital slots [8,9]. However, it is challenging for the conventional SIW structure to be integrated with the active device.…”
