Leaf Surface Sesquiterpene Alcohols of the Potato (Solanum tuberosum) and Their Influence on Colorado Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) Feeding

Abstract: The structures of two previously unknown sesquiterpene alcohols of the potato (Solanum tuberosum) were assigned. The potato alcohols were obtained by steam-distillation, preparative column chromatography, and separation into fractions by HPLC on a silica gel column. The fractions were studied by GC-FID, GC-MS, and NMR spectroscopy. The potato sesquiterpene alcohols were identified as kunzeaol (6-alpha-hydroxygermacra-1(10),4-diene) and ledol. These two compounds were used in feeding tests with larvae and beetl… Show more

“…Support for potential associational resistance for R. tomentosum-neighbouring species comes from earlier studies. R. tomentosum extracts, with myrcene and palustrol as main compounds, had repellent effects on ticks (Ixodes ricinus) (Jaenson et al, 2005) and mosquitoes (Jaenson et al, 2006), yet isolated ledol had no effect on feeding of the Colorado beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) (Szafranek et al, 2006). Instead, ledol induced an electroantennographic response in mahogany shoot borers (Hypsipyla grandella, Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and was suggested partly to account for their orientation to Guarea macrophylla trees (Lago et al, 2006).…”

“…Several sVOCs and many less volatile hydrophobic compounds have been described on leaf surface epicuticular waxes of crop plants (e.g. Szafranek et al 2006Szafranek et al , 2008. However, the understanding of deposition of VOCs and sVOCs on target plant leaves from their neighbours is often masked by the emission of similar compounds from both plant species.…”
