Leaf‐shape remodeling: programmed cell death in fistular leaves of Allium fistulosum

Abstract: Some species of Allium in Liliaceae have fistular leaves. The fistular lamina of Allium fistulosum undergoes a process from solid to hollow during development. The aims were to reveal the process of fistular leaf formation involved in programmed cell death (PCD) and to compare the cytological events in the execution of cell death to those in the unusual leaf perforations or plant aerenchyma formation. In this study, light and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the development of fistula… Show more

“…Welsh onion plants have fistular leaves; the fistular lamina change from solid to hollow during development, and the cells around the cavity break up until the remaining 1-2 layers of cells from the palisade show cell wall residues (i.e., "arrowheads") [30]. Under B light, red-green staining of leaf slices revealed similarly sized and tightly arranged palisade tissue in each layer with dense Chl.…”

“…DNA cleavage and TUNEL positive nuclei found in the pith cells during pith cavity formation further suggested that PCD might play an important role in this process (Figure ). The whole process is similar to the programmed cell death during the fistular leaf formation of Allium fistulosum (Ni et al ., ).…”

“…For example, only the abaxial identity existed in leaf blades results in a unifacial fistular leaf in Welsh onion [33, 34] However, the formation of fistular leaf cavities is still poorly understood. Although that a cellular investigation of the leaves of A. fistulosum found that the process of fistular leaf formation involved PCD [2], molecular evidences for the involvement of PCD in the formation of fistular leaf cavities is still unknown in Allium .…”

“…Varied leaf shapes can be observed among Allium species, including flat, columnar, solid, and fistular morphologies. Morphological and cellular studies have found that fistular leaves develop from solid precursors [2]. Developmental investigation of the leaves of A. fistulosum found that the process of fistular leaf formation involved programmed cell death (PCD) [2].…”
