Leaf rust resistance of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) lines derived from interspecific crosses

Abstract: Wheat lines which possess resistance to leaf rust were developed from the cultivar crosses between bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and wild cereal species: jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica Host), tausch's goatgrass (Aegilops tauschii Coss.), wild emmer (Triticum dicoccoides Koern.) and synthetic species Triticum erebuni Gandil. Resistance of breeding lines was examined at the seedling stage of wheat plants after artificial inoculation. Resistance genes Lr21, Lr22a, Lr24 (T1BL.1BS-3Ae#1L), Lr32, Lr34, … Show more

“…In the history of wheat breeding, disease and droughtresistant germplasm, such as wheat-rye 1BL.1RS translocation, have made outstanding contributions [10,37]. Our work also shows the value of using derivatives of the line H74/90-245 for generating advanced introgression lines combining genes resistant to fungal pathogens localized in wheat-rye translocation 1BL.1RS with complexes of effective resistance genes from other sources.…”

“…Overall, introgression lines have been widely studied with regards to different valuable traits in Ukraine [11,30] and in the world [12,45]. These lines were used: (i) to study theoretical aspects of genome evolution, mapping genes, alien trait inheritance or stability in wheat background [9,10], [40,46]; and (ii) to diversify the genetic variability of wheat and increase the efficiency of breeding [13,37,47,48]. Hybridization with distant relatives contributed to the transfer of genes for disease resistance [7,22,48,50,51], pests tolerance [52], and adaptation to abiotic stress factors [11,12,53] of bread wheat.…”

“…By 2013, 71 genes had been identified (Singh et al, 2013). The most effective genes are Lr19, Lr24, Lr26, Lr28, Lr34, Lr42, Lr46 and Lr67 (Gorash et al, 2014;Elangbam et al, 2018). The Lr19 is considered the most effective resistance gene, carrying immunity against most races of the pathogen in many regions of the world (Sehgal et al, 2012).…”

“…Однак, на сьогодні наявність гену Lr34/Yr18/Pm38 у сортах, які вирощують на території України, не забезпечує високого рівня стійкості проти рас патогенів, що домінують [11,12,13]. Незважаючи на даний факт, дослідженнями доведено, що комбінація його з іншими расоспецифічними генами, такими як Lr13, Lr22a, Lr26, Lr35, Lr37 та ін., значно підвищує рівень польової стійкості [6,11,12,13].…”
