-(Epidermal studies in medicinal ferns and lycophytes from Córdoba Province, Argentina). An epidermal analysis of vegetative and reproductive organs of 28 medicinal ferns from Córdoba Province (Argentina) has been carried out. The objectives were: a) to characterize in detail the epidermis of the organs; b) to contribute to the delimitation at specific level in cases of close morphological similarities; c) to provide additional information for a quality control of the commercialized ferns. Hair types, scales, microscales, respiratory structures, and epidermal cells features are described in detail. For each taxon, a description with illustrations and photographs are provided. Trichomes and type of stomata are novel data for some taxa. From a taxonomical point of view, indument and stomata types were the most significant characters to differentiate the taxa. The contribution to the quality control is summarized in the differential key and the iconography that allow the identification of a vegetal drug when it is fragmented or powered. Key words: hairs, microscales, quality control, scales, stomata RESUMEN -(Estudios epidérmicos en helechos y licófitas medicinales de Provincia de Córdoba, Argentina). Se realiza un análisis epidérmico de los órganos vegetativos y reproductivos de 28 helechos y licófitas medicinales, que crecen en Córdoba (Argentina). Los objetivos fueron: a) caracterizar en detalle la epidermis de todos los órganos; b) contribuir a la diferenciación de taxones estrechamente relacionados y c) proveer información adicional para un adecuado control de calidad de los helechos medicinales que se comercializan. Se describen en detalle distintos tipos de pelos, escamas, microescamas, estructuras de respiración y características de las células epidérmicas. Para cada taxón, se provee una descripción acompañada de dibujos lineales y fotomicrografías. Se describen por primera vez pelos y escamas inéditos y se mencionan tipos de estomas novedosos en varios taxones. Desde el punto de vista taxonómico, el indumento y los tipos de estomas fueron los caracteres más significativos para diferenciar taxones. El aporte al control de calidad queda resumido en los caracteres diagnósticos de la clave y en la iconografía que permiten la identificación de una especie cuando la droga vegetal se encuentra fragmentada o pulverizada.

Outside-Xylem Vulnerability, Not Xylem Embolism, Controls Leaf Hydraulic Decline during Dehydration

Leaf hydraulic supply is crucial to maintaining open stomata for CO 2 capture and plant growth. During drought-induced dehydration, the leaf hydraulic conductance (K leaf ) declines, which contributes to stomatal closure and, eventually, to leaf death. Previous studies have tended to attribute the decline of K leaf to embolism in the leaf vein xylem. We visualized at high resolution and quantified experimentally the hydraulic vulnerability of xylem and outside-xylem pathways and modeled their respective influences on plant water transport. Evidence from all approaches indicated that the decline of K leaf during dehydration arose first and foremost due to the vulnerability of outside-xylem tissues. In vivo x-ray microcomputed tomography of dehydrating leaves of four diverse angiosperm species showed that, at the turgor loss point, only small fractions of leaf vein xylem conduits were embolized, and substantial xylem embolism arose only under severe dehydration. Experiments on an expanded set of eight angiosperm species showed that outside-xylem hydraulic vulnerability explained 75% to 100% of K leaf decline across the range of dehydration from mild water stress to beyond turgor loss point. Spatially explicit modeling of leaf water transport pointed to a role for reduced membrane conductivity consistent with published data for cells and tissues. Plant-scale modeling suggested that outside-xylem hydraulic vulnerability can protect the xylem from tensions that would induce embolism and disruption of water transport under mild to moderate soil and atmospheric droughts. These findings pinpoint outside-xylem tissues as a central locus for the control of leaf and plant water transport during progressive drought.

Abstract:The epiphytic fern Microgramma squamulosa occurs in the Neotropics and shows dimorphic sterile and fertile leaves. The present study aimed to describe and compare qualitatively and quantitatively macroscopic and microscopic structural characteristics of the dimorphic leaves of M. squamulosa, to point more precisely those characteristics which may contribute to epiphytic adaptations. In June 2009, six isolated host trees covered by M. squamulosa were selected close to the edge of a semi-deciduous seasonal forest fragment in the municipality of Novo Hamburgo, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Macroscopic and microscopic analyzes were performed from 192 samples for each leaf type, and permanent and semi-permanent slides were prepared. Sections were observed under light microscopy using image capture software to produce illustrations and scales, as well as to perform quantitative analyses. Fertile and sterile leaves had no qualitative structural differences, being hypostomatous and presenting uniseriate epidermis, homogeneous chlorenchyma, amphicribal vascular bundle, and hypodermis. The presence of hypodermal tissue and the occurrence of stomata at the abaxial face are typical characteristics of xeromorphic leaves. Sterile leaves showed significantly larger areas (14.80cm 2 ), higher sclerophylly index (0.13g/cm 2 ) and higher stomatal density (27.75stomata/mm 2 ) than fertile leaves. The higher sclerophylly index and the higher stomatal density observed in sterile leaves are features that make these leaves more xeromorphic, enhancing their efficiency to deal with limited water availability in the epiphytic environment, compared to fertile leaves.
