Leading from the Niche: Insights from a Strategic Dialogue of Renewable Energy Cooperatives in The Netherlands

Abstract: Renewable energy cooperatives envision and manifest an alternative way of organising within the energy system (and beyond). Yet, despite their growth, it is uncertain whether such initiatives are able to increase and deepen their impact, leading the transition to an environmentally sustainable and socially just energy system. This paper presents insights from a strategic dialogue co-organised with the Dutch national interest group of renewable energy cooperatives “ODE Decentraal”. We used transition management… Show more

“…Last, but not least, the novelty of this research work is about the thorough analysis of existing big data on REScoops' activity that were acquired and the clarification of various behavioral characteristics of REScoops' members. As a result, after the statistical analysis of these big data, crucial gaps in the existing literature were filled, if someone takes in mind past research works, such as [26][27][28][29][30], which did not utilize such big data to draw their conclusions regarding REScoops and the efficiency of their initiatives.…”

“…Planko et al show that end-users are scarcely represented in the system-building networks that are active in the development of the Dutch smart grid sector [8]. Yet, times are changing with the increase of local energy initiatives [9], which increasingly broaden their activities that aim to further influence the direction and pace of the energy transition [10]. Potentially, local energy initiatives can extend their role from energy generation to performing active functions within the smart grid.…”

“…The joining of cooperative efforts to achieve mutual gains is also the subject of the study by Proka, Loorbach, and Hisschemöller (2018), focusing on the Netherlands. Brisbois (2020) observes the impact of energy cooperatives on political power dynamics, demonstrating the increased capacity of cooperatives to influence and how this has led to political victories.…”
