“…Overall, our findings contribute to the literature on international HRM in several distinct ways—first, we show how the practice of sponsoring guest workers for H‐1B and L‐1 visas is dependent on the unique context of multinational firms (Jackson & Schuler, ) and their strategic missions. Next, we add to the growing literature on innovation (see, for example, Minai, Singh, & Varma, ; Pingali, Rovenpor, & Shah, ), by demonstrating firms sponsor guest workers with different objectives in mind, such as innovation or cost‐reduction.
