The aim of the study was to examine the evolution of players' perception of group variables (leadership, motivational climate, cohesion, and collective efficacy) and to determine whether the intercept and growth trajectory differed as a function of whether expectations have or have not been met in a sample of semi-professional Spanish football players. The results show that the levels of the variables (except for autocratic leadership and coach-created ego climate) decrease over the season. Furthermore, the mean scores of the “fully meets expectations” group were significantly higher in positive leader characteristics, coach-created task climate, cohesion and collective efficacy. Also, rates of decline were significantly greater in the “does not meet expectations” group. The results indicate the importance of establishing reachable expectations by coaches and players because to achieve or to miss the expected goals can affect psychological group dynamics.

Coach leadership in a crisis context: Investigating effective coach behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic with a process view

IntroductionDrawing from the crisis leadership conceptualization, this study aims to investigate coaches’ opinion patterns on effective leadership behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study used a process view to explore how coaches as leaders act in pre, during, and post-crisis phases.MethodThirty-two fulltime professional coaches (28 males and 4 females) from individual and team sports who experienced the entire COVID-19 pandemic from January 2020 to July 2021 in the United Kingdom were invited to express their perceptions of effective leadership behaviors. The study used Q methodology to analyze coaches’ perceptions and experiences.ResultThe study revealed that the most effective coach leadership behaviors occurred during-crisis phase, which has the most positive ratings (n = 48) compared to the pre-and post-crisis phases (n = 18). The study’s main findings highlighted different phases of the COVID-19 pandemic demand various effective countermeasures from coaches. These practical and successful experiences were summarized as: division of labor, athlete-centered, team-driven, consulting, safe environment, and online coaching.DiscussionThe findings of this study further highlight (1) the importance of coach leadership in creating a safe environment as it provides a much better platform to prepare for a pre-crisis stage, (2) that coaches should employ more positive than negative behaviors while interacting with team members more frequently especially during the crisis period, reducing athletes’ negative feelings such as anxiety and worry, and (3) that the online training-related activities and interactions during the crisis time can be expanded to noncrisis times, as a crisis event can have positive implications for the future if handled properly.

Z kuşağı bireyler, yaşları itibariyle artık iş hayatına girişleriyle bilimsel çalışmalarda yer almaya başlamıştır. Önceki kuşaklardan farklılıkları gözle görülür şekilde ortada olan bu bireyler sporda da profesyonel olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Spor hayatındaki konumları genellikle sporcu olan bu kuşak mensuplarının antrenörleriyle olan ilişkileri başarılarında önemli rol oynamaktadır. Sporda liderlik üzerinde gerçekleştirilen çalışmalar günümüze kadar gelen kuşaklar üzerinde oldukça fazla sayıda işlenmesine rağmen, Z kuşağı sporcuları üzerinde gerçekleştirile çalışmaların sayıca hayli az olduğu dikkat çekmektedir. Bu derleme çalışmasının amacı Z kuşağına mensup sporcuların lider benimsedikleri antrenörlerine yönelik beklentilerini ortaya koymaktır. Bu amaçla alan yazın taraması yapılmış ve ulaşılan bulgular çalışmada sunulmuştur. Spor ile ilgili Z kuşağı ve beklentileri araştırmalarına bakıldığında da gerçekleştirilen çalışmaların oldukça az olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu konuda bulunan çalışmaların sonuçları, Z kuşağının beklentilerini tam olarak anlatmaya yetmemektedir. Z kuşağının kendine has özelliklerinin bulunduğu, bu özelliklerin yapılan çalışmalarla ortaya çıkmaya başladığı, yapılan çalışmalar incelendiğinde de diğer kuşaklardan farklı liderlik beklentileri bulunduğu saptanmıştır. Yapılan çalışmalar az olsa da bazı ortak sonuçların olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu ortak noktalar; Z kuşağındaki sporcuların iletişim becerileri kuvvetli, sevecen ve şefkatli, sakin yapıya sahip, takım benliği oluşturan, takımını motive ederken sporcuları ile kararlar veren bir antrenör istedikleri olarak sıralanabilir. Çalışmanın sonuçlarının profesyonel hayatta artık fazlaca yer alan bu sporcuların başarıları için önemli olduğu düşünülmektedir.
