This paper compares place leadership patterns of five European cities that have different administrative and socio-cultural traditions in order to understand the role that context plays in shaping city leadership patterns in the policy domain of sport. This paper uses an exploratory approach to analyse the city as a complex adaptive system. In pursuing this research, we investigate the main actors, structures, processes and followership patterns across different forms of city leadership (political, managerial, business and civic). Our findings show the similarities and the differences across the five cities that lead us to a two-part conclusion. Firstly, context may or may not influence city leadership patterns but it remains an essential parameter in comparative analysis.2 Secondly, the main challenges for place leadership in the policy domain of sport appear generalizable and specifically we observe that civic leadership as praxis can reinforce the transformative nature of place leadership in developing and sustaining socioeconomic resilience.

Emergence of regional leadership -a field approach. Regional Studies. The complex processes associated with the emergence of regional leadership are interpreted in this paper through a field theoretical framework, and are discussed with example cases relating to green economy developments in four Nordic regions. It is argued that macro-and mesolevel processes create opportunities and constraints for local agency, and how local agency can respond to this is discussed. Field theory offers a novel perspective on regional leadership because it helps one gain a deeper understanding of the various forms regional leadership can take. On affirme que les processus macro et méso créent les conditions et les contraintes propres à l'entremise locale, et on discute comment l'entremise locale pourrait y répondre. La théorie du champ fournit une perspective originale du leadership régional parce qu'elle aide à mieux comprendre les diverses formes que pourrait prendre le leadership régional. ZUSAMMENFASSUNGEntstehen von regionaler Führung -ein Feldansatz. Regional Studies. In diesem Beitrag werden die komplexen Prozesse beim Entstehen von regionaler Führung in einem feldtheoretischen Rahmen interpretiert und anhand von Fallbeispielen im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung der grünen Wirtschaft in vier nordischen Regionen erörtert. Es wird argumentiert, dass die Prozesse auf Makro-und Meso-Ebene Chancen und Einschränkungen für die lokale Wirkmächtigkeit erzeugen, und es wird erörtert, wie die lokale Wirkmächtigkeit hierauf eingehen kann.
