The short Hittite fragment 1086/c=KBo 20.64, currently listed among the texts related to the thunder festival under the number 631 of the Catalogue des Textes Hittites, presents some features that clearly distinguish it from the other documents collected under the same catalogue entry. It represents in my opinion what is left of an invocation ritual directed to a deity, probably to be identified with a hypostasis of the Stormgod, as the presence of the word tetḫeššar, "thunder", in the colophon seems to suggest. The text must therefore be collocated elsewhere, and I propose, in consideration of its content and structure, to place it either among the fragments of mugawar rites for the Storm-god under CTH 332 or, more generally, under CTH 459 (Fragments of mugawar). This paper presents for the first time a transcription, translation and commentary of the fragment. Interesting elements emerge from a comparison with KBo 30.119, another fragmentary tablet, erroneously classified among the fragments of festivals under CTH 670, where a similar invocation ritual seems to be described.

Muchos de los informes de rituales curativos basados en el principio de la magia analógica conservados en los archivos de Boğazköy están atribuidos a magas, muchas de ellas de origen extranjero y de lengua luvita o hurrita. Estas eran analfabetas, por lo que la primera redacción del ritual tuvo que basarse en un dictado de la maga. En el presente artículo analizaremos las pruebas de dicho dictado, que incluyen: rasgos propios de la oralidad que han quedado reflejados en la puesta por escrito del texto resultante; interferencias entre la especialista ritual autora del ritual, el traductor y el escriba; y pruebas del carácter bilingüe de la relación entre la transmisora y el escriba.

Hittite rituals can be defined as religious practices that are meant to activate supernatural powers for the sake of a human being. These systematic practices were enacted under the supervision of ritual practitioners in case of any negative situations namely illness, black magic, epidemic and evil. Considering Hittite texts, it is noticeable that a ritual was carried out on any day of the year on the request of the ritual patron. Although there is not a pre-determined time for performing a ritual, it is intrinsic for these religious practices that they have their own sense of time. Furthermore, the concepts of time are applied in an extremely systematic fashion and “ritual time” is a phenomenon, which plays an important role in regulating the course of the rites. Although the perception of time in Hittite rituals has been previously studied, there is not yet any systematic research focusing merely on the morning period. Therefore, this article aims at contributing the significance of time by investigating Hittite magical ritual texts with regard to the terms used for the morning period and the typical rites performed in that part of the day by comparing the data obtained from ritual texts listed under CTH 390-500.
