The Saint-Blaise/Bains des Dames stratified site in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, contains several occupations that span the Late through Final Neolithic, including the Horgen, Lüscherz, and Auvernier-Cordé periods. As part of a study on prehistoric metallurgy in western Switzerland, we compare the lead isotope ratios (multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer) and elemental compositions (instrumental neutron activation analysis) of the site's numerous copper finds to a database of corresponding measurements for copper ores throughout Europe. The results show a considerable variation in copper compositions present at the site, suggesting complex economic relationships and multiple chaînes opératoires during the time in question. Specifically, during the Final Neolithic, we distinguished ten coherent clusters, confirmed by both the elemental compositions and lead isotope ratios. When compared to the Europe-wide database of copper ores, we observed significant changes in the provenance of the copper through time that reflect equally significant changes in social, cultural, and economic interactions.

Charcoal analysis was carried out as part of an interdisciplinary project focusing on the copper mining history of the former mining area of Schwaz and Brixlegg, a region pivotal as a copper source in prehistoric Europe. The goal was to use remains of carbonised wood to investigate environmental implications of prehistoric mining, as well as to gain new insight about the ancient mining technique of fire-setting. Charcoal samples from seven copper mining sites (Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age) were analysed. The results reveal a strong preference for coniferous wood as fuel in fire-setting, but not in ore smelting/roasting processes. Species composition at the ore-processing sites indicates moderate forest degradation processes caused by human intervention.

Le plateau escarpé de Montredon est un relief remarquable culminant à 142 m, sur la rive gauche de l'Hérault ; sa masse trapue émerge d'une cinquantaine de mètres au-dessus des collines de la plaine environnante, à 3 km au nord-est de Montagnac (Fig. n°1 : Le plateau de Montredon dominant la plaine environnante (vue du sud-est)). Il correspond, en fait, à une de ces buttes témoins du Miocène qui s'égrènent dans cette partie de la moyenne vallée de l'Hérault. À 2,5 km au nord-ouest, une colline identique a conservé le site de Roquemengarde et, plus au sud, l'oppidum d'Aumes était occupé dès le Néolithique mais surtout à l'âge du Fer. Le fleuve Hérault coule à 2,5 km à l'ouest ; par le gué de Roquemengarde, le secteur minier de Cabrières (Ambert, Paul. 1990.) n'est qu'à une dizaine de kilomètres, en remontant le cours de la Boyne, guidé par la silhouette caractéristique du pic de Vissous. De forme subtriangulaire (Fig. n°2 : Le plateau de Montredon (vue aérienne prise du nordest)), ses côtés mesurent respectivement 150 m, 160 m et 200 m environ. Sa surface tabulaire assez régulièrement plane accuse cependant une déclivité d'environ 10 m du nord au sud alors que la pente est peu sensible d'est en ouest. Quelques légers replats naturels, laissant pointer un substrat rocheux de molasse, jalonnent ces dénivelés en plusieurs petites terrasses. Le plateau est limité sur les deux tiers de son pourtour par des falaises abruptes de 5 m à 6 m de haut qui se dressent au-dessus de plusieurs mètres d'éboulis avec, par endroits, de gros blocs détachés de la falaise. Quelques sources s'écoulent en permanence au pied même de l'abrupt.
