L’objectif de ce travail est de revenir sur la notion de paradoxe. Nous rappellerons tout d’abord les descriptions traditionnelles de ce phénomène – les efforts des linguistes se sont surtout concentrés autour de la description des rapports existant entre un contenu linguistique (explicite ou implicite) et : soit a) des connaissances encyclopédiques ; soit b) des évidences perceptives ; soit c) des croyances sociales ou des normes invétérées. Ensuite, nous montrerons sur un exemple – la première strophe de L’Expiation de Hugo ‒ les conséquences textuelles du paradoxe. Enfin, nous expliquerons comment la présence du paradoxe implique aussi pour le lecteur l’instruction d’aller chercher dans le texte les éléments permettant de déparadoxaliser le paradoxe et, par-là, d’atteindre une compréhension globale. Nous arriverons à deux conclusions : 1) que ce procédé est un formidable facteur de cohésion, une manière fine de regrouper des morceaux textuels autrement épars – même des éléments à l’apparence anecdotiques ou banalement descriptifs révèlent avoir, dans le cadre de ce procédé cohésif, un rôle herméneutique fondamental ; 2) que la déparadoxalisation est une étape nécessaire du parcours de compréhension car il n’y a point de compréhension en dehors du sens doxal. Ces observations nous obligeront à reconsidérer – et finalement à réfuter – une idée classique, traditionnellement liée à la notion de paradoxe : celle de son pouvoir de subversion. Le paradoxe sera décrit alors non pas comme s’opposant à la doxa, mais en tant que prolongation de celle-ci.
