Entre 1274 et 1278, Pierre de la Broce, chambellan et favori de Philippe III le Hardi, fait édifier dans l’enceinte du château de Châtillon un programme palatial à la mesure de son ambition. Le logis principal, dont la façade sur cour et celle tournée vers la vallée sont abondamment ajourées, est flanqué d’une imposante terrasse d’agrément construite en débordement sur l’escarpe. Après la pendaison de Pierre de la Broce en 1278, Philippe III et Philippe IV achèvent la construction de la chapelle. La subdivision du niveau unique originel d’une partie des appartements par Jeanne Raguenel à la fin du XVe siècle donne lieu à la construction d’un escalier rampe sur rampe qui serait le plus ancien exemple conservé en France. Le palais, source d’inspiration directe du logis ducal de Loches, apparaît comme une résidence castrale novatrice dans son rapport au jardin et au paysage. Par sa datation précise et son remarquable état de conservation, l’édifice est un jalon essentiel de l’architecture civile du XIIIe siècle.
