Élargissant leurs horizons et les incitant à une plus grande liberté artistique, elle confirma ces peintres dans leur recherche esthétique et les aida à dépasser les traditions de la culture européenne . Un nouveau rapport s'établit avec les créations artistiques des autres continents. On ne se borna plus à leur emprunter occasionnellement des thèmes, des couleurs ou des techniques. La « découverte » en 1905 de la statuaire africaine par Vlaminck et Matisse suit de près l'intérêt éveillé par l'art de l'Extrême-Orient et des peuples d'Océanie et fut en quelque sorte préparée par la vogue dont jouissait, depuis l'Exposition universelle de 1867, l'art japonais pour lequel s'engouèrent les impressionnistes, Gauguin, Van Gogh et les créateurs de l'Art nouveau. L'écart différentiel ressenti au contact d'un art « primitif », dont l'on soupçonnait mal l'existence, fut néanmoins beaucoup plus grand que dans le cas des cultures de l'Extrême- Orient, à la réputation bien établie aux yeux des Européens depuis l'antiquité. C'est pourquoi cette « découverte » marqua d'une profonde empreinte les grands courants artistiques à la veille de la Première Guerre mondiale.
