The effects of lymphoplasmapheresis on immunologic indices, including T cell subsets, and on clinical parameters of rheumatoid arthritis were evaluated in a controlled double-blind trial. Twenty patients were randomized to receive either 6 lymphoplasmapheresis sessions or a seemingly identical control procedure over a 3-week period. Lymphoplasmapheresis produced significant reduction in serum levels of total lymphocytes, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and IgG. These serologic measures returned to baseline 5 weeks after lymphoplasmapheresis. No change in the imbalance of T cell subsets (increased helper/suppressor ratio) was observed. No changes in the serologic measures, except IgA, were observed in the control group. An improvement in some of the clinical parameters was observed in both the lymphoplasmapheresis and control groups. A rebound above baseline values for several parameters was observed in both the lymphoplasmapheresis and the sham apheresis groups.

Summary Six patients in a family with a history of hereditary angioedema reported swelling of the extremities and recurrent abdominal pain occurring spontaneously or after trauma. Attacks of oedema involving the airways, the greatest danger with this disorder, were present only in one case. This autosomal dominant disease is due to deficient activity of the inhibitor of the first component of complement. Low levels of C4, and absence of C1 esterase inhibitor confirm the diagnosis. Two asymptomatic cases with the appropriate biochemical abnormality are reported in this study. For short term prophylaxis of attacks (before surgery especially), fresh frozen plasma is used, or better still, C1 esterase inhibitor. For long term prophylaxis of attacks antifibrinolytic and hormonal drugs are used: in two cases, the authors obtained good results with methyltestosterone after failure of tranexamic acid.

RESUMO Neste artigo, são abordados alguns aspectos do processo de emigração política, resultantes da dinâmica entre revolução e contrarrevolução, em Portugal, nas décadas de 1820 e 1830. Ainda que os sentidos e as direções dos exílios variem de acordo com o resultado das sucessivas disputas que se travaram no país entre realistas e liberais, será quando D. Miguel ascende ao poder, em 1828, que um número estimado em quase uma dezena de milhar de pessoas, acusadas de “acérrimas liberais”, é obrigado a deixar o país. Buscando ressaltar a natureza transnacional e transcontinental desse fenômeno migratório, apontamos as condições nas quais se encontravam esses emigrados, assim como os diferentes destinos que tomaram, incluindo, entre eles, o Rio de Janeiro e outras províncias do Brasil.
