This article provides formulae to determine the root mean square (rms) value of a capacitor current in an inductive-capacitive-inductive (LCL) filter used in a parallel active power filter (PAPF) circuit. The article presents an analysis of three components of the capacitor current: a component forced by the usually distorted voltage of the grid; a component forced by the nonlinear load current harmonics and harmonics in the output current of the PAPF that compensates them (a novel aspect presented in this document); and a component forced by the inverters of the PAPF containing carrier and sideband harmonics. The article also presents formulae for determining the rms value of current harmonics in dc-link capacitors forced by the ripple of the ac output current without load of the filter inverters (also novel to this document). The results of the analysis have been confirmed by simulation and experimental research of a commercial active filter consisting of two parallel interleaved voltage inverters. Elements of the LCL filter of the PAPF have been selected according to dependencies available in scientific and technical literature. In addition, the formulae presented in the article are used to verify the correctness of selection of capacitors from the point of view of their catalogue acceptable rms value of capacitor current.

Inverters are commonly controlled to generate AC current and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is the core index in judging the control effect. In this paper, a THD oriented Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS MPC) scheme is proposed for the single-phase inverter, where a optimization problem is solved to obtain the switching law for realization. Different from the traditional cost function, which focuses on the instantaneous deviation of amplitude between predictive current and its reference, we redesign a cost function that is the linear combination of the current fundamental tracking error, instantaneous THD value and DC component in one fundamental cycle (for 50 Hz, it is 0.02 s). Iterative method is developed for rapid calculation of this cost function. By choosing a switching state from a FCS to minimize the cost function, a FCS MPC is finally constructed. Simulation results in Matlab/Simulink and experimental results on rapid control prototype platform show the effect of this method. Analyses illustrate that, by choosing suitable weight of the cost function, the performance of this THD oriented FCS MPC method is better than the traditional one.

Modeling and Enhanced Error-Free Current Control Strategy for Inverter with Virtual Resistor Damping

In microgrid, the grid-connected inverter current with the LCL (inductor-capacitor-inductor) output filter is amplified at certain frequencies. Using virtual resistor damping method can help suppress the amplification. By choosing an appropriate virtual resistor value, the model of the inverter current control loop is simplified as a 2 nd -order lowpass filter. Based on such simplified model, this paper proposes a design method of reference current compensation controller, which does not require decomposition of harmonic components. With the reference compensation, the inverter output current control precision is improved obviously. The simulation and experimental results verify the accuracy of the inverter simplified model and effectiveness of the reference compensation design method.
