The objective of this paper is to identify the good practices and management systems related to Sustainable Supply Chain Management SSCM. This study is qualitative with exploratory objective. By examining SSCM publications across journals and across time (from 1997 to 2011) in the three aspects of sustainability, there is a growing number from 2004/2005 onwards. The social aspect is rarely addressed in the literature, in contrast with environmental followed by the economic. The management systems reflect this finding as well as with the eight practices identified. There is no management system that addresses social responsibility. Only two practices address the triple bottom line aspects, while four address environmental and economic aspects, one deals with social and economic and one deals with environmental aspect. The two frameworks proposed by the authors are the contribution in this paper. The first relates the good practices adopted in SSCM to the three aspects of sustainability and their interactions. The second organizes the management systems in layers according to how they address the sustainability aspects. SSCM, as well as Sustainable Operations Management, present themselves as the most comprehensive management model. In SSCM new practices are used together with those found in the supply chain management.

Finding a balance between food supply and demand in a manner that is sustainable and which ensures the long-term survival of the human species will be one of the most important challenges for humankind in the coming decades. Global population growth in the last several centuries with the attendant demands resulting from industrialization has made the need for food production and processing an important issue. This need is expected to increase in the next half century when the population of the world exceeds 9 billion. Environmental concerns related to food production and processing which require consideration include land use change and tremendous reduction in biodiversity, aquatic eutrophication by nitrogenous and phosphorus substances caused by over-fertilization, climate change, water shortages due to irrigation, ecotoxicity, and human effects of pesticides, among others. This review summarizes key highlights from the recently published book entitled Green Technologies in Food Production and Processing which provides a comprehensive summary of the current status of the agriculture and agri-food sectors in regard to environmental sustainability and material and energy stewardship and further provides strategies that can be used by industries to enhance the use of environmentally friendly technologies for food production and processing.

The Use of MIVES as a Sustainability Assessment MCDM Method for Architecture and Civil Engineering Applications

Environmental and sustainability assessment tools have an important role in moving towards a better world, bringing knowledge and raising awareness. In the architecture and civil engineering sector, these assessment tools help in moving forward to constructions that have less economic, environmental and social impacts. At present, there are numerous assessment tools and methods with different approaches and scopes that have been analyzed in numerous technical reviews. However, there is no agreement about which method should be used for each evaluation case. This research paper synthetically analyzes the main sustainability assessment methods for the construction sector, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in order to present the challenges of the Spanish Integrated Value Model for Sustainability Assessment (MIVES). MIVES is a Multi-Criteria Decision Making method based on the value function concept and the Seminars of experts. Then, this article analyzes MIVES advantages and weak points by going through its methodology and two representative applications. At the end, the area of application of MIVES is described in detail along with the general application cases of the main types of assessment tools and methods.
