Layering of contrast material in oral cholecystography

Abstract: Serial erect roentgenograms of the gallbladder during oral cholecystography were taken in 50 patients before and after a fatty meal. In the presence of good opacification, layering of opaque and nonopaque bile was noted in most cases 2 hours after the fatty meal. The degree of layering was related to the extent of gallbladder contraction produced by the fatty meal and the degree to which the gallbladder refilled by the inflow of nonopaque liver bile. The layering phenomenon thus appears to be a manifestation o… Show more

“…When a person is in the upright position, bile stratifies into layers which increase in specific gravity from the neck of the gallbladder downward to the fundus. This layering phenomenon can be visualized roentgenographically after the administration of a contrast agent because differing concentrations of opaque material are found in the various strata of bile [1]. Layering may occasionally be seen during oral cholecystography as well as during intravenous cholangiography.…”

“…Layering may occasionally be seen during oral cholecystography as well as during intravenous cholangiography. It is independent of the type of contrast agent being used and has been observed after administration of iodipamide meglumine (Cholografin, Biligrafin) [2-6, 8, 9], iopanoic acid (Telepaque) [1,9], and ipodate sodium (Oragrafin).…”

“…The implications of layering for the anatomic evaluation of the biliary system and for the demonstration of stones have been studied by cholecystography (I, 2, 4, 15, 22), cholegraphy (3,4,20,26,40), and also by cholangiography with emptying of the gall-bladder by cholecystokinin in connection with oral cholecystography (9, 10).…”
