Layered Thin-Film Composite Consisting of Polymers and Calcium Carbonate: A Novel Organic/Inorganic Material with an Organized Structure

Abstract: Layered polymer/calcium carbonate (CaCO3) composite films have been successfully obtained by alternate repetition of spin-coating of polysaccharides and thin film crystallization of CaCO3 in the presence of an acid polymer. SEM images show layered structures consisting of brick of the inorganic crystal and mortar of the polymer.

“…[86] In contrast, in the absence of polymer additives in solution, rhombohedral calcite crystals were obtained on the polysaccharides. [87,89] On glass substrates that are not coated with polysaccharides, no thin film formation was observed, even in the presence of acidic macromolecules. These results suggest that the cooperation of the polysaccharides and acidic macromolecules is essential for the thin film crystallization of CaCO 3 (Fig.…”

“…9 The cooperative involvement of insoluble and soluble macromolecules during crystallization of inorganic compounds seems to be a general strategy in biomineralization. 1 Nacre formation was mimicked by Kato et al [10][11][12][13][14] to synthesize polymer-CaCO 3 thin film composites. The combination of an insoluble solid matrix with soluble acidic macromolecules induces thin film crystallization of CaCO 3 on the matrix (Figures 1c and d).…”

“…For instance, template inhibition strategy can be applied in the production of thin films of CaCO 3 crystals, using soluble acidic polymers, such as poly(acrylic acid), as additives, which leads other polymers such as chitosan, chitin, and cellulose to act as a solid matrix in their presence. The obtained films thickness can reach values of ∼0.8 µm [82][83][84]. Combination with other techniques, such as the spin-coating, allows the production of layered polymer/calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) composite films [84].…”
