Layered Double Hydroxide−CdSe Quantum Dot Composites through Colloidal Processing:  Effect of Host Matrix−Nanoparticle Interaction on Optical Behavior

Abstract: Layered double hydroxide (LDH)-monodispersed 4-nm CdSe nanoparticle composites were prepared through restacking of layers of colloidally dispersed delaminated LDH in the presence of CdSe nanoparticles in 1-butanol. The composites exhibit a blue shift for CdSe absorption, which increases with a decrease in nanoparticle content. The observed blue shift is due to the interaction of the quantum dots with the LDH layers, which leads to surface modification of the nanoparticles.

“…Exfoliation of layered solids has been exploited as a route to nanomaterials [1][2][3] and functional nanocomposites [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Exfoliation of layered solids results in colloidal suspensions of solvated monolayers or packets of few layers.…”

“…Delamination, a process unique to layered solids [7,8], has much to offer in the preparation of nanocomposites as this process gives monolayer colloidal dispersion of layered solids which has the potential to blend layered solids with almost any type of guest species. We have recently shown the use of this method in the preparation of a number of composites such as layered solid-nanoparticle [9], MgAl LDH-CoAl LDH [10] and α-nickel hydroxide-α-cobalt hydroxide [11] composites.…”

“…We have earlier shown that delamination of layered solids followed by restacking the exfoliated layers in the presence of guest species is a good method for the preparation of well dispersed layered composites [7][8][9]. Many layered composites have been prepared through this route in the recent past [10][11][12].…”
