Layer by layer assembly of sulfonic poly(ether sulfone) as heparin-mimicking coatings: scalable fabrication of super-hemocompatible and antibacterial membranes

Abstract: In this study, super-hemocompatible and antibacterial polymeric membranes with surface coated nanofilms were fabricated by LBL assembly of water-soluble heparin-mimicking polymer and quaternized chitosan.

“…Therefore, there is a need of designing, synthesis and overall property evaluation of novel antibacterial agents. The biocidal property of the materials containing ammonium, imidazolium cations were widely used as disinfectants and cleaning agents in hospital and food industry . The PIL from imidazolium family showed high antimicrobial properties against gram positive bacteria, good blood compatibility, and low cytotoxicity, as well as low adsorption of bovine serum albumin .…”

“…10, the improved hydrophilicity of the substrate surface produced by the LbL assemblies was responsible for the bacterial anti-adhesion activity against E. coli. 96 A top-down degradable multifunctional LbL system consisting of two types of multilayers was fabricated for antibacterial applications. 93 Heparin as an anti-adhesive agent with a negative charge and chitosan as a bactericidal agent with a positive charge were alternatively deposited onto aminolyzed poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films to construct anti-adhesive and bacteri- cidal LbL films which were able to reduce the initial adhesion and subsequently the number of viable bacteria (E. coli) effectively.…”
