Laws and Trends of the Evolution of Traditional Villages in Plane Pattern

Abstract: This study collected and analyzed dynamic spatial data of eight traditional villages scattered in different regions of China. A multi-temporal analysis of morphological metrics of spatial patterns and a regression analysis of the morphological evolution were used to analyze and contrast the historical spatial processes of different villages. These were then compared using patch texture and rural macro-morphology perspectives. This led to an assessment of the general laws and trends associated with rural spatia… Show more

“…Meanwhile, it should be combined with the rural revitalization strategy, focusing on digital protection, connotative excavation, and deep application development of traditional architecture and cultural heritage, while balancing historical and cultural preservation with industrial development and following the development ideas of protection, innovation, perseverance, and integration [31,32,36]. Under the premise of achieving digital protection of all elements of traditional village heritage, leapfrogging development must be achieved while implementing all-round protection in conjunction with rural revitalization and construction of historical and cultural cities [37][38][39][40].…”

“…The evolution of rural settlement patterns reflects the adaptability of humans to various economic and geographical conditions, the natural environment, and historical developments. Accordingly, it is an important topic in rural geography research [16,17]. The study of traditional settlement morphology in China began within the past 20 years [18].…”

“…The spatial morphological characteristics of ancient towns or traditional villages have been identified based on spatial grammar and other methods [36,37]. Furthermore, the historical spatial processes of villages have been analyzed and compared using the multitemporal analyses of spatial pattern morphological indicators and regression analyses of morphological evolution [16].…”

“…With the development of information technology and spatial technology, 3S technology has been applied to the spatial data collection of traditional villages, e.g., Fu et al [11] used 3S technology to investigate the data of selected traditional villages and establish a spatial database. Yang et al [12] collected remote sensing images from diferent periods to process into multitemporal maps to obtain changed spatial data. Although these methods can acquire spatial data faster and avoid the destruction of cultural heritage, they are not the ideal way to collect spatial data of villages due to the infuence of single form of data, image resolution, and cloud cover.…”
