Central problems in the interpretation of the Neoproterozoic geology of the North Atlantic region arise from uncertainties in the ages of, and tectonic drivers for, Tonian orogenic events recorded in eastern Laurentia and northern Baltica. The identification and interpretation of these events is often problematic because most rock units that record Tonian orogenesis were strongly reworked at amphibolite facies during the Ordovician-Silurian Caledonian orogeny. Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd geochronology and metamorphic modelling carried out on large (>1cm) garnets from the Meadie Pelite in the Moine Nappe of the northern Scottish Caledonides indicate prograde metamorphism between 950-940 Ma at pressures of 6-7 kbar and temperatures of 600°C. This represents the first evidence for c. Ma Tonian (Renlandian) metamorphism in mainland Scotland and significantly extends its geographic extent along the palaeo-Laurentian margin. The Meadie Pelite is believed to be part of the Morar Group within the Moine Supergroup. If this is correct: 1) the Morar Group was deposited between 980 ± 4 Ma (age of the youngest detrital zircon; Peters, 2001, youngest published zircon date is 947 ± 189 (Friend et al., 2003)) and c. 950 Ma (age of regional metamorphism reported here), 2) an orogenic unconformity must separate the Morar Group from the 883 ± 35 Ma (Cawood et al., 2004) Glenfinnan and Loch Eil groups, and 3) the term 'Moine Supergroup' may no longer be appropriate. The Morar Group is broadly correlative with similar aged metasedimentary successions in Shetland, East Greenland, Svalbard, Ellesmere Island and northern Baltica. All these successions were deposited after c. 1030 Ma, contain detritus from the Grenville orogen, and were later deformed and metamorphosed at 950-910 Ma during accretionary Renlandian orogenesis along an active plate margin developed around this part of Rodinia.

The Embu Complex in the Neoproterozoic Ribeira Belt of Brazil provides a record of sedimentation associated with the Rodinia supercontinent and its subsequent deformation and metamorphism during assembly of West Gondwana. It is composed of a succession of variably migmatized pelitic schists and paragneisses, as well as minor calcsilicate rocks with quartzite intercalations, and orthogneiss. Detrital zircon U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS and SHRIMP) determinations for key samples of the Embu Complex in its type-area (West and Southwest of São Paulo City), and samples from neighboring units (Votuverava and São Roque groups) indicate distinct provenance histories and in combination with other data, discrete times of sediment accumulation. Detrital zircons from the Embu Complex are characterized by ages in the range 1500-1000 Ma and 2000-1700 Ma, with a very minor number of older ages. The youngest detrital grain is dated at 974 ± 12 Ma. Metamorphic zircon overgrowths range from 850 to 570 Ma with age peaks at ca. 820-790 and 650-570 Ma. Thus, the depositional age of the Embu Complex is constrained to 970-850 Ma. The detrital zircons of the Votuverava and São Roque groups are dominated by ages in the range 2200-2000 Ma, along with minor Paleoproterozoic and Archean ages. The youngest detrital grains are ~1400 Ma (Votuverava Group) and ~1750 Ma (São Roque Group). Metamafic rocks from the Votuverava Group have crystallization ages of ca. 1300 Ma, with a higher metamorphic grade amphibolite showing a range of discordant ages with upper and lower intercepts of 1300 Ma and ~800 Ma, respectively. These results demonstrate that the Embu Complex was probably accreted to the Apiaí Terrane during a Tonian (820-790 Ma) orogenic event, prior to final development of the Ediacaran Ribeira belt arc-related magmatism and a transcurrent shear zone system. The main source area for detrital zircons of the Embu Complex is likely to be the Grenville-Sveconorwegian-Sunsás orogen or time-equivalent regions rather than the central portions 2 of the neighboring cratons. The Embu Complex geological context is consistent with accumulation on the margin of the Rodinia supercontinent.

The paleoposition of North China Craton in Rodinia has long been in controversial. This paper mainly focuses on the U–Pb geochronological studies of detrital zircons obtained from Bayan Obo Group exposed in the Shangdu area, Inner Mongolia, aiming to provide more information for interprating this problem. Based on the acquired data, this paper comes to the following conclusions. Firstly, the depositional age of Bayan Obo Group might be from Meso– to Neoproterozoic according to the zircons U–Pb dating results. The lower succession of this group, namely Dulahala and Jianshan formations deposited between 1800 and 1650 Ma. The Halahuogete and Bilute formations deposited between 1500 and 1350 Ma. For Baiyinbaolage and Hujiertu formations, their depositional age was 1250–900 Ma. Secondly, for the provenance of Bayan Obo Group, this paper believes detrital zircons with age of 2.51–2.71 Ga and 2.00–2.48 Ga were from Guyang, Xi Ulanbulang and Zhuozi area; the Khondalite Belt provided detrital zircons with age of 1.95–1.80 Ga; zircons with age of 1.60–1.75 Ga might come from granitic rocks in Miyun Area. The magmatism after 1.60 Ga was rarely recorded in the NCC, therefore those zircons with ages younger than 1.60 Ga might come from outside of NCC. The magmatism with the same age existed in Baltic, Amazonia and Laurentia. Based on previous paleomagnetic researches, this paper proposes that NCC might receive detritus from Baltic during 1560–1350 Ma and had affinity with Laurentia and Amazonia at ∼0.9 Ga in Rodinia. Baltic, Amazonia and Laurentia might be potential provenances for non–NCC detritus in Bayan Obo Group.
