Producción científica estudiantil en Latinoamérica: un análisis de las revistas médicas de habla hispana indizadas en SciELO, 2011

Objetivo. Describir la producción científica de los estudiantes de medicina en las revistas médicas de habla hispana indizadas en SciELO correspondiente al año 2011. Materiales y métodos. Estudio bibliométrico. Se analizaron los artículos originales de las revistas médicas indizadas en SciELO y pertenecientes a países de Latinoamérica de habla hispana correspondiente al año 2011 para determinar la participación estudiantil. Resultados. Se revisaron un total de 99 revistas indizadas en SciELO, correspondientes a 11 países latinoamericanos de habla hispana. El país con mayor número de revistas médicas indizadas en esta base de datos fue Cuba, seguido de Colombia y Chile. Se contabilizaron 2.476 artículos originales correspondientes al año 2011, de los cuales 88 (3,6%) tuvieron entre sus autores a algún estudiante de medicina. Los países que tuvieron más revistas con publicaciones estudiantiles fueron Colombia, Chile y Perú. La facultad con mayor producción científica estudiantil fue la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. En cuatro publicaciones se observó participación de estudiantes de dos o más facultades distintas. No se encontraron artículos con participación de estudiantes de diferentes países. Conclusión. Se halló una escasa participación estudiantil y un bajo nivel de colaboración entre estudiantes de distintas escuelas de medicina. Se recomienda tomar medidas a distintos niveles para incrementar estas cifras, y evaluar periódicamente su evolución. Palabras clave. Bibliometría. Educación médica. Escuelas médicas. “…In the search years studied there were few Latin American journals indexed in MEDLINE, so many scientific articles of Latin American origin were not included in the analysis. On the other hand much of the mainstream biomedical research taking place in Latin America is in collaboration with high-income countries 7 for which a large number of researchers are signed as first-named authors, which means that although the retracted articles may include Latin America authors, these could not be found in an initial search at MEDLINE, which only retrieves the country of origin of the first-named author.…”

“…It would be a very helpful insight if measures could be developed which prevented and detected these ethical shortcomings, especially now that more Latin American journals are being indexed in Medline or the Science Citation Index 7 , which in the future could detect plagiarism in scientific journals more frequently if no measures are taken to prevent such misdoings. Indeed, a search in MEDLINE between February 18, 2008 and November 9, 2012, revealed that 13 more retracted articles from Brazil were found, as well as two from Mexico and two from Argentina.…”
