Latex allergy in fruit‐allergic patients

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of latex allergy in fruit-allergic patients, and to assess its clinical significance. Fifty-seven fruit-allergic patients and 50 non-fruit-allergic atopic patient controls were studied. All patients were questioned about conventional immediate symptoms after contact with latex products. Patients also underwent skin prick testing and determination of specific serum IgE to latex, as well as a screening test for environmental allergens. Immunologic latex… Show more

“…Specifying the actual food allergy showed that fruit and shellfish were most important. NRL proteins are reported to cross-react with a wide variety of fruits [20, 21], but the presence of common allergens in latex and shellfish has not been reported [22]. The effect of more specified food items may be of importance, but due to small numbers this could not be investigated in the present study.…”

“…In 30–70% of patients with a latex allergy associated food allergies have been observed, particularly to banana, avocado, chestnut, kiwifruit (see kiwifruit allergy), and many more . About 11% of patients with a fruit allergy showed symptoms after latex challenge . Oropharyngeal symptoms are frequently observed, but in about 10% of latex associated food allergies anaphylactic reactions have been observed.…”

“…In the latter, fruit class 1 chitinases displaying hevein‐like domains have been identified as major cross‐reactive allergens [17, 26, 27]. As fig fruit hypersensitivity has been described also in the context of latex‐associated food allergy, although not very often [28–30], it is well conceivable that hevein‐like allergens in fig, similar to those identified in FB latex [16], are important allergens. However, there is sufficient evidence now from this and previous studies that latex allergy is not mandatory in Ficus ‐related allergies.…”
