ABSTRACT:Resistive gaseous detectors can be broadly defined as a sub-type of gaseous detectors that are operated in conditions where virtually no field lines exist that connect any two metallic electrodes sitting at different potential. For most practical purposes, this condition can be operationally realized as 'no gas gap being delimited by two metallic electrodes' [1]. Since early 70's, Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are the most successful implementation of this idea, that leads to fully spark-protected gaseous detectors, with solid state -like reliability at working fields beyond 100kV/cm, yet enjoying the general characteristics of gaseous detectors in terms of flexibility, optimization and customization. We present a summary of the status of the field of resistive gaseous detectors as discussed in a dedicated closing session that took place during the XI Workshop for Resistive Plate Chambers and Related Detectors held in Frascati, and especially we review the perspectives and ambitions of the community towards the XII Workshop to be held in Beijing in year 2014.

The multigap resistive plate chambers (MRPCs) are gas ionization detectors with multiple gas sub-gaps made of resistive electrodes. The high voltage (HV) is applied on the outer surfaces of outermost resistive plates only, while the interior plates are left electrically floating. The presence of multiple narrow sub-gaps with high electric field results in faster signals on the outer electrodes, thus improving the detector's time resolution. Due to their excellent performance and relatively low cost, the MRPC detector has found potential application in time-of-flight (TOF) systems. Here we present the design, fabrication, optimization of the operating parameters such as the HV, the gas mixture composition, and, performance of six-gap glass MRPC detectors of area 27 cm × 27 cm, which are developed in order to find application as trigger detectors, in TOF measurement etc. The design has been optimized with unique spacers and blockers to ensure a proper gas flow through the narrow sub-gaps, which are 250 µm wide. The gas mixture consisting of R134A, Isobutane and SF 6 , and the fraction of each constituting gases has been optimized after studying the MRPC performance for a set of different concentrations. The counting efficiency of the MRPC is about 95% at 17.9 kV. At the same operating voltage, the time resolution, after correcting for the walk effect, is found to be about 219 ps.

Timing Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) are planar gaseous detectors made with a combination of metallic and resistive electrodes, delivering time resolutions around 50 ps σ and efficiency up to 99% for MIPs. In this work we describe the development and test of an electrically shielded timing RPC array for crosstalk-free time measurements in high granularity time-of-fight (TOF) systems, as the Inner TOF Wall of the HADES experiment.
